I am ordering a set of spool and sideplate TG bearings for my Steez 103H and TD-Z Type R.

What oil should/can I use for these bearings? I was just going to use the standard Steez/TDZ oil, is that okay?

Also, what steps are involved for removing the spool shaft pin and sideplate bearing? Is the clip on the sideplate easily removed and what tool is usually used (I have read somewhere chopstick)?

Thanx in advance as I new to this upgrading stuff but have been an enthusiast for a long time.

I have a few reels with TG Rocket bearings ( my favorite other than the price ) there is one oil TG recommends, high speed TG Yellow. This thing works phenomenal for me....now be prepare to re-oil frequently.

I made this tool to remove the pins, it is very elementary since I don't have a lot of power tools, basically I cut a corner of a Craftsman flat tip mini plier 1/4 x 1/8 " with a medium file. The metal is soft so it took less than 30 min. It works great to remove and re-inset the pins.
The tips are covered by electric tape to protec the shaft.

dragon,
The lighter the oil the better performance, but as Lubina said you'll need to re-oil more often, the lighter the oil and higher the precision bearings.

TD-Z/Steez, Yellow Rocket Fuel and Hot Sauce oils offer a good compromise between performance and re-lube interval. However, I've found Oust Met Oil lasted about as long and provided just a little better performance with Abec 7's. (You can get it from Dawn at smoothdrag.com.) Tournament Rocket Fuel is extremely light and you won't get much time on the reel before you need to re-lube your bearings, especially Abec 7's.

Lubina,
Nice set of pliers, you should post your pic and a small description of how you made them in the Tips Sticky at the top of the forum. I'm sure there will be plenty of members interested in them!

dragon1,
Sorry I forgot to answer your other question:

Check out the Tips Post at the top of this section of the forum. (The Sticky Post). It has lots of tips for removing the pin on the spool shaft and small spring clip in the palm plate.

Thanx guys,

I will also make sure to get ahold of D.R. to see if he can hook me up with some pliers for the spool pin.

I have been wanting to get into the next step of enthusiast fishing for a while (upgrading parts/bearings) and will probably try cleaning my own reels sometime soon. For now, I'll just send them in to D.R.

BTW, should I transplant the spool and sideplate bearings from my TDZ Type R to my TDZ 103P...I am hoping that the ones from the Type R are of higher performance, although I may be wrong as maybe the better casting performance is from the Type R tuned spool and inductor cup.

dragon,
If the bearings in your TD-Z R have gold/bronze colored shields and the other doesn't then swapping them out may provide a little better casting performance. Otherwise, I don't know if I'd bother.

I have a TD-Z -R that had them, but a +R that didn't.... The tuned inductors on the R tuned reels makes a significant improvement in braking response and cast performance. The bearings and lubricant used in them will also make a difference, especially if you go with ceramic hybrids.

Becareful not to mess up the pin or shaft. The pin can damage pretty easyly and are always hardest to remove the first time you do it.

I find a AA battery works good and because of most batterys coatings it will be scratch resistant (aside from the tips). Make sure you use the flat end to push the pin out and and rest the other side in your palm. If your palm hurts from it use a towel or something to dampen the pressure. There's a penny trick to but I found it to be impossable for me (only tried it once). The retainer that holds the bearing in the side plate is the easyest and can be removed by taking a mini flat head (kind for eye glasses) and gentlly poping the spring inward. Pull it out with your hand over it so it dont get lost if it shoots out.

The only reel where I really had trouble removeing the spool pin so far is the Steez spool. I literally had to use a center punch to punch it out cus it broke off. Good thing I had an extra laying around in my stock Sol spool that was there due to the IZE Gold spool upgrade on it.

I cant believe no one makes a tool just for this job. I would buy one or two in a heart beat as im sure many would on here.

About the oil. I like the Daiwa Red but am staying with Hot Sauce. Its already in all my reels aside from my Sol (which is getting the Hot Sauce now).

After you do this a few times youll gain more confidence in yourself and try to do the next big thing. My Sol is completely apart right now. Laughing

i believe the viscoscities of the red oil and the hot sauce oil are the same.

They may be, I cant tell a performance difference between the two. However, I find the Hot Sauce to last longer on my bearings then the Daiwa Red. This doesnt add up to the table ive always followed for lubes made by MarkG and Sandman.

ChuckE(or anyone), do you find it lasts a little longer as well?

GO,
Funny you should mention that! I do find the Hot Sauce lasts a little longer than the Red Daiwa oil -- maybe up to 4 more hours using the reel before you need to re-lube. I suspect that although the viscosities are similar, the Hot Sauce doesn't seem to cast off as much, right after it is initially applied.

I've noticed less Hot Sauce residue on the inside taper of a clean spool, after the first dozen or so casts -- difficult to see unless you hold the spool near a light and tilt it. On the other hand, if you do the same after using the Red Daiwa oil, the spool will appear to have a little more oil residue on it. I've seen this on stock, Abec 5 ceramic hybrids, and Abec 7 ceramic hybrid and ss shielded bearings. However, I don't remember ever looking for the difference with unshielded bearings. since I don't have many reels with unshielded spool bearings in them anymore.

Weird....

Yes Boys,

I am going to commit to trying to fiddle with my reels more this Winter...not brave enough to take them fully apart, but things like bearings, handles, and soon drag upgrades.

BTW, I am looking for post-its about how to change out stock TDZ drags with Carbontex? Anyone? Also, who is your source for Carbontex drags?

Thanx in advance.

dragon1,
You can use the Sol Mini-lube article for disassembling just about any Daiwa low profile reel, along with the specific schematic for your reel. You'll just disassemble the reel down to the point that you get to the drag components.

I get my Carbontex washers directly from Dawn at smoothdrag.com. However, others can also supply them (DR, Jim at Heartland, etc.). Also do yourself a favor and get some Cal's grease when you get new washers -- it makes the drag perform a little better in my opinion if you coat the new washers with Cal's when you do the upgrade.

Where is Cal's grease sold?
