book,
Good Find! Very similiar to the pair that I made, even the same brand from Sears.
I drilled 5/64 holes, but 3/32 will probably be better.
You want to make sure that the hole's somewhat close to the edge, so there's no chance in contacting the bearing with the pliers.

Mine is similar, except the hole is 1/32 inch from the end of the tool.

I made one last night and it came out great. Worked like a charm. Getting the pin out that last little bit after it is flush with the shaft is a huge pain in the spool. _________________ If you do what you’ve always done, you’ll get what you’ve always gotten. |

book,
I know what you mean, sometimes getting a pin out after you've pushed it flush can be tough. I made a couple of tools to help remove the pin the rest of the way. One tool was made from a nail that can be put over the end of the pin to push it the rest of the way thru the spool shaft. I made the tool by grinding the tip of the nail to a smaller diameter with a dremel tool chucked with a grinding wheel. I also made another tool out of a 2" piece of 1/16" stainless steel wire that I straightened out, and jammed into a piece of wooden dowel so about 1/2" of wire was left out of the dowel.
Most of the time you don't really need to apply any real force to the tool to get the pin the rest of the way out, because the pin only has a very small crimp in the center of it that is keeping it in the spool shaft. Other times, you may have to press it a little harder, because the pin has a set of ridges that run the length of the pin that keeps it in the spool shaft. The last order of pins I got from Daiwa had a mixture of both types of pins.
If you do need to put a little pressure on the pin tip to get it out of the shaft, you can set the spool shaft on a piece of wood to support it, and then just press the pin out. That way, you won't risk damaging the spool edge or distorting the spool.

ChuckE,
Take a look at the small drift punch I made to finish pushing the pin out. It's on the same page at the pliers (link at top of this thread). Took 10 minutes to turn it down using my drill press and a small file. |

Some of you may know that I am a machinist and own /operate my own machine shop. I've made a set of pliers which have true parallel jaw action so it is essentially a true vise action. I modified the jaw faces to include a V-groove which firmly and accurately holds the shaft in perfect alignment to install/remove the pins. Everything is there on the faces to do everything PERFECTLY.....perfectly square drive, perfect removal, perfect install, etc. It is fishing time now so I'm not going to screw w/ it, however in the upcoming cold months....I will post detailed pics. etc along with details of the tool. If there is enough interest, I will run a small batch and just cover my costs to members, (I'm guessing around 40-$50.00).
Mods....please do not think I'm trying to advertise as I am not trying to ,"go into business", or anything. My business is the manufacture of Military hardware....I would simply be willing to extend a courtesy to other "tinkerers" |

| Please post when your ready to make the pliers, I just got a drill press for Father's day and I was going to modify my Craftsman duckbills as soon as I got a chance. As for a drift pin punch I bought a 1/16th" punch that fits perfectly. I also bought a really neat vice from Sears that has removable soft jaws, it will hold the spool without damaging it. |

Hi Scot,
Do you still have the Spool Pin Removal Tools which you intended to make it available? Are there any left? I'm interested in getting one myself, for both my Daiwa and Shimano. Thanks.
Regards,
Wilson |
