spooling a new Shimani Ci4

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Hi evertone I am new to the forum and are from Invercargill in the south island of New Zealand

I have just purchased a new Shimano Ci4 stradic reel and are about to put line onto it.

The spool lip design is different to the other Shimano reels I have owned, what I need to know is how much do you fill the spool? Right to almost the top or to where the spool angles back? I hope I have explained this properly, those with the new spool design shouls know what I mean??

Will appreciate any help!!

If I recall the manual correctly, you should be spooling up to the base of the lip. The spool lip design is pretty much the same for the latest generation of medium- to high-end Shimano spinning reels, including the Stradic FI.

You might want to check the instruction manual that came with the reel to verify.

The pic in the manual is of a rounded lip spool, not the angled lip.

Here is a pic, I always spool mine up to where it starts to "lip out". This pic was on the net.

Invercargill???? Aren't you supposed to be racing motorcycles in stead of fishing, old Burt Munroe is probably rolling over in his grave as we speak.

The propulsion lip on the CI4 is tapered to reduce line drag which yields increased casting distances. From my experience, I have treated this spool no differently than my other older generation spools. My rule of thumb has been to leave 1/8" for copolymers & braid, 1/4" for fluorocarbon. The increased stiffness of fluoro necessitates a bit more cushion to ensure that the line doesn't "barf" of the face of the spool.

Hope this helps.
