Jigs.....Rattle or no rattle??

Jig it, spin it, buzz it, if it's got a wire or a lead head, it can and will be discussed in here.

Jigs.....Rattle or no rattle??

When using jigs for flipping in grass or would, do you prefer to use a rattle or no rattle? In what applications does one have an advantage over the other?

Lately i have been doing better with the ones without rattles, but i know some guys always have a rattle on them.

Personally I would rather use one without a rattle than with with, but sometimes in muddy water I have to use a rattle. I would say that I use one without 90% of the time. Heavy grass would be another time I might use a rattle.

Same here, well said. Yesterday I received a $60 dollar order of 1/4 jigs for casting, and none of them have rattles. I don't flip, so most of my jig work consists of casting a flat off of our dock; this is pretty much a finesse presentation for me.

There are a few after-market rattles that slip onto many jigs. I believe Northland is one of these manufacturers.

Although I let my customers decide what they want, I personally see the need for both jigs with rattles and ones without. If I am fishing clear water, I usually start out without. If it is dirty or I am targeting fish in dense cover, I go with rattles.

Thanks for the helpful tips/suggestions guys. Most of my flipping is in grass or lay downs along the shore. Looks like i will need to have some with and some without!

I fish mainly clear lakes and tend to use rattles, generally the kind where the collar holds 2 rattles. However, I've had several instances where I started with rattles, got on fish and realized later at some point that the rattles had fallen off, but was still catching fish. So in my experience, I don't think its matters. Stained and or muddy water might be different.

Thanks for the responses guys. Think I am going to go with rattles in dirty/murky water and no rattles in clearer water.

I personally have not noticed a difference. It would make sense to have them in poor visibility situations but I have not noticed a difference.

I usually don't use rattles at all. But yesterday fishing some grassy areas I was not getting any bites, so I added a dual rattle to my jig and it made all the difference.

Later, :)

Pretty much let the fish tell you what they want. However as a rule of thumb - clear water - light stain no rattles, anything else rattles.

Personally, fishing in grass it may dampen the affect of the rattles. They are not lound to begin with. I like ratlles when pitching against hard wood laydowns where you can shake it while its lying on the wood to help the rattles affect.

I prefer rattles about 95% of the time. If I`m not getting bit on highly pressured water I may try without.

I agree, depending on water clarity..

I fish at a place that has SEVERAL lakes, the biggest lake is VERY clear so when i fish there, i do NOT use a rattle, but the muddier lakes i do tend to use them.

Also, ill use a rattle at night time. I think it helps a little bit, and my strike percentage goes way up. Hope that helped :big grin:
