Whats the best way to rig a Fluke?

Postby Bass Ninja » Wed Jun 30, 2010 12:46 pm

The subject is my question. I dont fish them much but would like to know whats the best way to rig them. Is bait casting gear better or is spinning gear more adapt to the lighter application of the rig. Any info will be appreciated.

Thanks,
Ken

I fish Super Fluke sized baits on casting tackle. They are very aerodynamic and cast a mile. I sometimes fish smaller fluke-type baits with a medium light spinning rod. I fish them mainly in rivers for smallmouth bass, so I am able to fish lighter tackle. 90% of the time I don't have a problem with weeds, so I nose hook my fluke baits. Since you don't have to drive a heavy EWG hook into the fish you can use light tackle. I use an Owner 1/0 Mosquito hook. This system works and catches fish. Yesterday I caught 50 smallmouth on bubblegum and pearl Flukes.

However, it might not work in your fishing situation.

ROG,
Do you mind sharing your retrieve method? Bottom bouncing? Steady slow retrieve (swimming)? Do you let the fluke sit?

I like drop-shotting a small fluke in open areas and on Erie. Big flukes are good weightless with a EWG hook, and I tend to use this setup on inland lakes.

I have had decent luck throwing flukes with long shanked 1/16 darter head jigs or fishing them weightless.

I give my Flukes a erratic twitch, twitch, then let it dead drift. I used to love fishing streamer flies for trout and smallmouth, and fishing a fluke is just like fishing a streamer. In the current the fluke makes a swing while you are twitching and drifting and it usually gets deeper toward the end of the swing, then it rises in the water column when it reaches the end of the drift. The fish usually hit as the Fluke starts to fall after the twitch, or as it starts to rise at the end of the drift.

I also just started fishing flukes this year and have had great success by giving it two to four quick twitches then just let it fall for three to five seconds and repeat. I also use a 7 ft light action spinning rod for this bait it gives great sensitivity and just enofe backbone to set the hook. I rig the bait up as if a texas rig without the weight and just sick the tip of the hook back into the back of the bait.

I fish mine with a MH rod with a fast action tip paired with a 7.0:1 casting reel with 14-17 pound line. I usually t rig it with an EWG hook, weightless, skin hook the point and I'm ready to go. I'll cast it out and use the twitch twitch pause method the others above mentioned. One little tip here. You can adjust the way you rig the fluck on the hook so that you get a slight upturn of the nose on the fluke. This will allow you to use a slightly faster twitch twitch and cause the fluke to jump from the waters surface. At times this drives bass wild.

I fish them wading rivers for smallies, typically on a spinning rod with 4/15 braid into a swivel with an fluro leader. I peg a 1/16 or 1/8 tungsten weight at the swivel like a light c-rig. Cast upstream and either dead drift or very slight twitches. I like a 2/0 for the Superfluke Jr. and a 3/0 for the Superfluke, I usually have loads of grass to contend with so it's texsposed.

I gotta get out for some of that soon! Since I got a boat I forget how much I like doing that.

I fish the double rig in smokey shad. It works ok but it compleatly weedless and I know there is going to be a time when it kills them. I saw it on the FLW.

I Texas rig 'em and work them like a spook. Sometimes right at the surface or I'll let them sink a ways before starting my retrieve depending on the mood of the fish. Rigging them in tandem can be absolutely deadly at time's. Change the size up a little too, Try running two different sizes at the same time ;)

I like T-Rigging Super Flukes with a weighted hook. Just twitching it straight back to the boat parallel to weedlines does just fine for me.
