Re: Travel rod recommendations
+1 on the 4 piece megabass levantes. I have the F5 611 4P. A little difficult to source now, but the rod is very versatile. I've thrown 1/4 ounce neds to small 1.5oz class swimbaits and caught fish. The orochi xxx series are real nice too. I haven't tried the casting version, but I have the jade pyt...

Re: Bass Fishing Bycatches
I've caught a carp on a bone popper before. Probably thought it was a piece of bread that the kids in the neighborhood always throw for the ducks.

Re: How long does braid last
Unless there is significant fraying, I leave it on until my spool is low. Oldest braid I have now is going on 3 seasons. I tie braid to leader though, so that may help a bit.

Looks like a solid reel. May have to pick up one for bank beating trips.

Re: 19 shimano antares
The antares is definitely a special reel. I haven't fished the other two reels you mentioned, but I've compared it to reels up to the metanium dc and it's definitely got that it factor over the others.

Re: Better than the average travel rod?
+1 on the Levante. Awesome travel rod for the money. Another plus for me is that it's 4 pieces instead of the usual 2-3 piece. A lot easier for me to stash in confined spaces.

Yes, I think some techniques are just better on a spinning rod. Call them fairy wands, but sometimes you need a little magic.

Re: A longer MH rod
I really enjoy my Destroyer Javelin. I'd rate it as a medium-heavy plus, but it does everything within its weight range well. It's my go to rod if I can only bring one rod. And yes, I've thrown paddle tails, jigs, and texas rigs. Can definitely handle them, but 1/2 ounce jigs would be the top end I'...
