Re: Fly Tying

Yes....a fly tying vise is probably the most important tool. I've tied thousands of flies all the way down to size 28 and all I have used were cheaper vises. They did ok. Yes....my flies are very well made.....I'm very particular about how my dry fly sits on the water. I no longer make size 28 or 26...

Re: Ultralight rig braided line comparison

Nice post however, I did see a few errors. First of all, you do not spool your reel from the package. You must lay the spool of new line flat on the floor. When reeling in the line, you stop every once in a while and lower your rod tip to see if the line starts to coil. If it does, you turn the spoo...

Re: Fluro recommendations for finesse fishing

There is a series of ponds that I frequently fish, with many big largemouth bass residing in them (I can visually see them on each trip). However, they frequently turn their noses up at my offerings, and I'm starting to wonder if it might be due to my line (10 lb hi-vis yellow PowerPro). Now, I am ...

Anything except fluorocarbon.

Re: color vs water clarity

I've always had good results using white lures in muddy water. In clear water, natural colours have always worked great. But, I don't fish for bass....there are none in my region but this works out very well for walleye.

Re: What is the point with hybrid lines?

For the past few years, I have been using Berkley Sensation mono in 4 and 6 lb test. The stuff is great even though it is a bit more expensive. I say "mono" because only recently I found out that it is actually a copolymer line. Now I know why it's so tough. I guess the harder outer coating causes i...

Re: Need braid advice

When using ultra thin braids or fusion lines, I don't use a leader. When I first started to use these lines, I thought that the question of visibility would be an issue but now I know that even though they are visible, they do not in the least bother the fish. I've found no difference in catch rates...

Re: Closing the bail by hand

There was a time when you closed your bail by reeling the reel but now with the instant anti-reverse that is on almost all reels....especially the higher quality reels, the bail is hard to close when the handle is turned so closing the bail by hand is the best way.

Re: Doubled Uni & Palomar Knots

For tying hooks to my line, I have been using a snell knot. I started using snell knots when I got some eyeless hooks from a friend in Europe. I tie the real snell knot. I use a sewing needle to make the snell knot. When I'm finished winding the line around the shank of the hook, I pass the end of t...

Re: What color line for trout?

For the past few years, I've been using Berkley Sensation copolymer (clear) in 4 lb test and it has been great. The average size of the brook trout is about 15 inches but I have caught up to 20 inches. Not once did the line break. Hook ups are great too.

Re: Anyone else hate fluorocarbon?

Ok....funny guys. Why should I use fluorocarbon? Give me one situation where fluorocarbon line is indispensable or even preferred over any other material. If I want a stronger line, I just have to use braid that is the same size as 15 lb fluorocarbon. That means using 40 or 50 lb braid. I bet you a ...

Re: Anyone else hate fluorocarbon?

I noticed that a few people say that fluorocarbon is more sensitive than mono. How can this be if the fluorocarbon stretches just as much as the mono? As for the vertical sinking....I tried it when I used 6 lb Vanish and it seemed to me that my baited hook did not go to the bottom exactly where I wa...

Re: Anyone else hate braid?

I saw some Suffix 832 braid today. The stuff is covered with a waxy coating that I can scrape off with my fingernails. After scraping with my fingernail, the line was flat. I bought some 30 lb Spiderwire Ultracast Fluoro Braid which has 1 strand of gore. From what I've read on the internet, just abo...

Re: Anyone else hate braid?

I like braid. All of them are good but I prefer the ones that have no coating to make them a bit stiffer and more manageable. Braid is the only way to have very strong line without the size. I can not even imagine using 50 lb mono on a small baitcaster. Even 30 lb mono is huge. No stretch....no prob...

Re: Anyone else hate fluorocarbon?

I just can't find anything good about it. Just about everything positive that has been said about this line has been proven to be untrue. Just about everything that is negative about this line has been true. Care to elaborate? You just made a very negative statement without even stating why you hat...
