Re: St. Croix Triumph Travel rod Guide size

St. Croix customer service has been good about supplying that info in the past. For the rods not built in America they've even given me a suitable alternative guide since the guides on the rod aren't available in the US.

Re: All Carbon Integrated Reel Seat & Grip, Slipery when wet?

These handle looks really slick and attractive, but just wondering if they can become slipery when wet? While I haven't used anything from this company I can say that I don't have any complaints about the carbon fiber grips that I have used on builds. From purchased grips to ones I laid up myself. ...

Re: Winding Check / Carbon Tube help

I use Matagi. While I don't use the SK seats often, I've not had an issue finding what I need there. http://www.matagi.co.jp/english/index.html

Re: Stripping/Rebuilding a rod with a textured blank

Blanks with a finish are more difficult to work with. Its pretty hard to remove everything and not damage the finish. So, you wind up putting the new components right where the old ones were to cover up those blemishes. Or, you strip the finish all the way off the blank so you have a fresh canvas. T...

Re: Exposed Thread Reel Seats

I haven't seen them in the rod building world but I have seen female threaded rings that were split across the center and had two small screws, one on each edge, to keep the ring together. That way you can get onto captive male threads by placing each half of the ring on the threads and screwing the...

Re: Exposed Thread Reel Seats

I'm skeptical of that working out. No harm in trying it though. There is a surprising amount of force that can be applied by threads and I'd imagine that you'd blow your glue line open. After all, the intent here is for something that can really torque down your reel seat nut. You will intentionally...

Re: Spinning Guides

In what category/ies do SIC guides outperform Torzites? To be honest, I don't recall. That was about 10 years ago when they were released. I think I recall ceramic hardness and ceramic weight, by volume. Much like the Gold Cermets of old, I didn't find them to be a outright better choice, and they ...

Re: 7' Medium Heavy + Fast Action blank?

My Phenix K2 715 is my frog rod. I feel it is a little heavier than all of my Loomis IMX 844's. It is really beefy. I'm surprised that is has an RDA of 655. I would think that it would be a little higher. So...I do have two different 715's in my database now that I look further down the list. One i...

Re: Spinning Guides

Matt Everyone seems to have jumped on the KRh guide system these days. Sounds like you still like the 27x method. Dont get me wrong its proven and flat out works. Would like to hear your thoughts on one vs the other TIA Matt Well, this is going to probably be a little lack-luster of an answer, but ...

Why’s your typical guide train look like for a 7’ish spinning rod look like Mattman?
For most freshwater set ups that aren't at the ultra light end or the heavy swimbait end, not counting the tiptop... 25, 16, 10, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5.

Re: Spinning Guides

Fuji TiSiC's are a staple for me. The weight reduction is very impressive. Very corrosion free. I struggle with the Torzites from a cost standpoint. For the big jump in price, I would expect a ceramic that out performs SiC in every category, but that's not the case. Same thing back 15 or 20 years ag...

One more question: any suggestion on how to glue ferrule and blank? Super glue, epoxy, or maybe it doesn't matter?

I use Rod Bond epoxy.

Any tips on where I would source that fiberglass stock?

I've gotten lucky before and bought some closeout blanks for dirt cheap. I've had a good relationship with a CS agent at a supply place and they've hooked me up. And, I've bought full price blanks that I knew would do the job.

Re: Ferrules

Personally, I've not been able to find a retail ferrule that I was happy with. Although I admit I stopped looking years ago. I build all my own oversleeve ferrules. I've found spigot ferrules to be very difficult to pull off. Oversleeve ferrules seem to be much more forgiving. At least in my experie...
