Re: Drag slipping in cold weather

Interesting. My last thought is that flouro being stout with a relatively hard 'skin' could easily emulate the characteristics of braid especially in freezing temps. Perhaps unspooling one of the reels, apply a layer of tape or other soft material to the spool arbor and then respool as usual ... th...

Re: Drag slipping in cold weather

All drags should slip to a degree, that's what they're designed to do. My questions are does the degree of slip incrementally change in proportion to small increases in drag tension as applied by the drag star ? Can you achieve full (or close to full) lockdown when the drag is at it's maximum setti...

Re: Working on Reels - Tips!

After having to disassemble the sink trap to recover a tiny bushing I came up with this. Dollar store kitchen sink drain strainer, the lid from an electrical tape package and binder clips. All small parts go inside and can be submerged, agitated, rinsed and excess water shaken off. I've been using t...

Re: UL bass in Africa

Fantastic. I love seeing fish from other places.

Now I'm watching snow fall  while yearning for June when the big stud bull bluegills come out to play. I pretty much ignore fishing for everything else to chase them.

Re: Bubble fishing for trout

Has anyone tried the USDM Daiwa Presso? they make a 9' , 2-6# UL model but at $80 I'm a little leary on quality. I have the 7' one. Not a horrible rod, a bit noodly for my tastes but works well for presentations where a solid backbone isn't required. Had a minor issue with a trim ring on the reel n...

Re: Weight Transfer System Stuck

Maybe the hundreds (thousands ?) of casts resulting in the impact of a metal ball into softer plastic has changed the dimension of the plastic to the point that it now has trapped the ball ?

Re: If I need new BFS reel?

Not sure of the ages of the participants on this thread (I'm 54) but I remember when Made In Japan was looked upon as poorly as Made In China is now ... Japan became dominant in manufacturing and quality in the 80's and still is. China is not there quite yet but they're coming up. It's just a matter...

Re: What grease are you using for small spinning reels?

How thin is Super Lube when compared to Daiwa Space Age grease? Asking because it's marketed as a heavy duty grease. I've never handled the Daiwa grease so I couldn't tell you, but I'd rate the Super Lube about a medium as far as tackiness goes. What you need to consider when it comes to grease in ...

Re: New small spinning reel - high-end Shimano, high-end Daiwa, or Van Staal?

The Tournament SS series from Daiwa ticks all of your boxes and will be in service long after the rest have whimpered out. Seriously, very few spinners can claim the same durability / reliability track record of these. The fact that it's been in continuous production for over 30 years ought to tell ...

X2 on the Super Lube. You can get a 3 oz tube at Harbor Freight for $7.00 ... that tube will last you for years.

Re: Kuying TopCaster Rod review X2

Agreed, I wouldn't touch any of those cheap Chinese reels, I don't have the same confidence they would be as good as the rods. Zero confidence in fact. I got $45 invested in a Tsurinoya XF 50 reel. It's toyish without a doubt, but the tinkerer in me likes a challenge ... it casts just a tad beyond ...

Re: Kuying TopCaster Rod review X2

Uncanny timing for this thread as I just got back from fishing my new Kuying Teton 6'6" L casting rod for the first time. Here's a link to my earlier thread about it over in the rods section - http://www.tackletour.net/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=79755 Unfortunately the fish were non existent for ...
