Re: What was your rod's breaking point?

Being dumb trying to unsnag, otherwise didn't notice that I nicked the blank in handling the rod.

Re: Budget Ultralight Spinning Rods

Given your budget, you can pick up a Daiwa Revros 1000 LT for $50 each shipped if you look around...it has a nice shallow spool too. The rods are just a bit harder...though a USDM Daiwa Presso UL rod would be close...$60-70 each shipped dependent on the length desired. Daiwa's Spinmatic D UL rods wo...

Discovering why that little 850 Spinlite cost as much as the 860 surf casting reel...a bronze main gear and probably a steel pinion, will check with a magnet when I get it completely apart.
The pinion is indeed steel, so a pretty robust main gear and pinion!!

Re: Vintage Ultralight

I like Mitchell 308s, but you have to work with the reels a bit to learn their oddities regarding line lay...there's a lot of other ways to screw them up too. They are easy to take apart, usually a good thing, unless whoever did it put them back together wrong. Mitchell was also odd in sticking to ...

Re: Vintage Ultralight

You might try to put a shim or two behind the main gear and housing to account for any gear wear; that could fix it unless the bushings are really worn. thanks, good idea.. I have a collection of teflon washers of various thickness, will try those.. You're welcome...go thin as possible at first, it...

Re: Vintage Ultralight

I wasn't aware that the repro's were still being made...so that's pleasant news...not surprised at the cost at all for a short run reel with that kind of quality in design and materials.

Sometimes you do really get lucky with Ebay! :D

Re: Vintage Ultralight

That Cardinal 3 is built like a tank! All you mentioned are neat reels...and command higher costs to acquire then too...at least the SS700 is still in production. :D I like the old DAM Quick Microlight 265..they go high, even rashed & bashed up ones usually; probably for parts, which are difficult t...

Re: Vintage Ultralight

Indeed it is a Langley 850B. You might try to put a shim or two behind the main gear and housing to account for any gear wear; that could fix it unless the bushings are really worn. There are numerous Mitchell shims on Ebay you could try; you'll want to get ones 0.1mm in thickness, about .004". I'd ...

Re: 2 lbs mono/fluoro on size 500 vs size 1000/2000.

Shimano 500 reels all seem to follow the same design form...higher priced models had more bearings, or better main gear/pnion materials...which could account for the differences. Contemporary Symetre FJ, Sedona FS and Sienna FD schematics. https://www.reelschematic.com/wp-content/uploads/schematics/...

It has it's place and isn't terrible...I owned a Shimano Symetre 500FJ that I really liked.

Re: 2 lbs mono/fluoro on size 500 vs size 1000/2000.

Thanks all for the comments. They more than answered my question. It seems very conclusive that the 500 reels have SIGNIFICANTLY reduced casting distance among other negatives. The only advantage would be visual balance with short rods (for some) and lighter weight. The Vanford and Soare 500 are ju...

Re: 2 lbs mono/fluoro on size 500 vs size 1000/2000.

I have one 500 sized reel and that’s a soare ci4 500s I use on my little 5’ ajing rod. I prefer the performance of the 1000s and 2000s reels but they look awkward on small rods in my opinion so I’ll keep the 500s on there. There is a bit of sacrifice with distance on the 500 but it’s on a 5 foot ro...
