I don't own either reel but I do know that Alan Hawk has done some really nice reviews of both. Just do a search for "Alan Hawk reels" on google.

The drag only functions when your hand is off the handle.

Nice preliminary evaluation Alan. Your take on things is highly respected by many including myself.

The "original" Ryobi Varius M had only magnetic control not both magnetic and centrifugal controls. The Ryobi Varius F series had centrifugal brakes in the form of flying arms(similar to new or last year's Morrum ) Very nice to see that the Cabelas' version of the reel has the shaftless spool design...

Btw: the level wind guide can likely be replaced with one from a c3.

Not sure with the addition of the level wind guide, but I would conjecture no better and no worse.

Looks like a 6601AB that has been modified to function as a standard 6601 c3. The AB refers to an anti- backlash system. Can't recall exactly how that system worked but I do know that the vast preponderance of those who purchased the reel didn't think much of the anti-backlash device. Consequently, ...

Curious as to what elements of the reel are plastic? Plastic isn't necessarily a bad thing for many parts. Depends on where its being used.
