I own a 7' medium heavy, fast acton St. Croix Avid and I use it alot for jigging with weights from 1/4 ounce up to 1/2 ounce plus plastic. It has no issues casting or pitching 1/4 ounce weights plus plastics.
For what you are planning on doing, it would be a very good rod.

Re: Zillion painted versions
I own two 50th and both have held up very well but I also take care of them. I always put reel covers on them when transporting them and I don't throw them around in the boat.

Re: BPS Johnny Morris reel
I do not have that specific model but I have the Signature models and have been using it for the last 10 years along side my Daiwas and Quantums and it has held up very well and they get steady regular use. One of them is a dedicated crankbait reel.

Re: Light pitching rod
The St. Croix LTB 7'-0 medium actually has more power than it implies. From what I have seen St. Croix tends to under rate their rods. The medium is almost as stiff as most manufacturer's medium heavy so it is pretty stout for how little the rod is.

Re: KVD Square bills
I own some KVD square bills and they have worked well for me. I have all three sizes (1.0, 1.5, and 2.5). They run straight out of the box and they come with better rings and hooks than the standard Strike King products. The hooks and split rings are heavier gage. The line tie ring is the oval shape...

Re: CHIME IN: Best line for drop-shotting?
I like using Trilene 6 lbs mono because the line is manageable. I tried using fluoro first (6 lbs Trilene 100%) but it was just too springy especially when using smaller weights and baits. There is one that I did like about the fluoro though. Since it is denser than mono and it sinks, it helps pull ...

Re: Need suggestions on heavier Jig rod.
I am currently using a St. Croix LTB 7'-3" XH. It is a stout rod and is light for how big it is.

Re: River Monsters vs The Hunt for Big Fish
I like watching both. River Monsters is more educative (not really a word :D ) while Hunt for Big Fish is more imformative for the every day fisherman. I like the fact that he goes after fishes that I have never seen or heard of before. The thing I like about Hunt for Big Fish is Larry does a good j...

Re: Anyone else using braid exclusively?
I use braid only on my jigging rods. For reaction baits, it is still mono to me. I tried braid with reaction baits and I was losing too many fish.

Re: PLAT or JapanTackle?
I have not bought anything from Japan Tackle but I have bought a few items from Plat. I have no complaints with Plat. If the items are in stock, the items are shipped out pretty quick. The only time it will take longer is if the item is not in stock or it is a hard item to find. The last item I boug...

Re: Help me choose a reel for swimbaits!
If I may add another...Garcia HC60. I am currently using the HC60 for the larger baits and a 200E5 for smaller swimbaits. The HC60 can cast the bait out and it has a smooth retrieve and a strong drag. The only downside is that it is a bit on the heavier side. Are you talking about the Record? I hav...
