- Bingo. You need more washers, not less.

I grab mono and pull it... doing so takes some stress off the reel.

Sometimes it won't break that way, and starts to burn my hand... in those cases, a wooden dowel is useful, or wrap the line five or more times around the soft cork or EVA rod grip and pull.
