Re: Strength testing of carbon fiber reel parts

I've fished Diawa, Shimano, and Quantum, along with Pflueger and Abu Garcia. I have tried lots of reels, all with pros and cons. Quantum always had great ideas, like their externally adjustable centrifugal brakes, but their stuff didn't hold up, either the reel itself, or the finishes, or both. I've...

Re: Strength testing of carbon fiber reel parts

I won't pay $279 for a composite reel that weighs 6.5 oz with 8 bb's when I can get an Exo 100, an aluminum reel that weighs 5.9 oz with 11 bb's, for $250. The whole deal with whatever composite they use, is to save weight without sacrificing performance. So have a composite reel that weighs more th...

Re: Strength testing of carbon fiber reel parts

I just keep reading how important have a "rigid frame" is for keeping bearings and gears aligned, to get optimum performance. Baitcaster reel frames are so thin in areas I worry about that, although the carbon fiber technology has come a long way since one my sons got his first carbon fiber spool on...

Re: Straight up long distance

I recently bought an Exo 100, and put it on my Powell 714EF jig rod for fishing small jigs and Ikas. With 12lb BPS fluoro, I can throw it farther than any other setup I own by 50'.
It's amazing.
I fish clear water, so long casts are important.

Strength testing of carbon fiber reel parts

With Shimano's new C14+ reels coming out, it seems like the composites have finally reached a level where they can be used in reels without sacrificing anything. I know it's fine for some things, like side plates, handles, and drag stars, but now they are using it for reel frames, so it must have me...

Re: What is That Mystery Reel on TT FB page

Big on bling, short on sting! Probably has a bamboo main gear and cardboard drag washers. :P That's what upgrades and supertuning are for Even the cheapest reels today are so much better than the reels from 20 years ago. Plus, there are probably just a handful of actual reel manufacturers, like the...

Re: Trokar hooks

Makes sense. I use light wire hooks a lot, because I fish rocky lakes with no timber or wood, and very thin weeds. I throw the fat Ika a lot, and have been using the Mustad Megalite EWG #5 hooks. They are both thin and strong, and very sharp. But I can't find them anymore. I think Mustad stopped mak...

Re: What is That Mystery Reel on TT FB page

I guess, with CNC manufacturing and advanced scanning, it's inevitable.
Let's hope that, on the cheap labor side anyway, globalization means more and more people want higher pay for their work, so we all have a level playing field.
It's happening right now in China.
Fingers crossed.

Re: What is That Mystery Reel on TT FB page

How in the world can they manufacture, package, ship, and sell a reel for $35 in the first place? Either they have free parts and slave labor, or the shoemaker's elves are working overtime.

Re: Will this drag star fit a CH 51MG?

Shimano had a replacement drag star. I could have still used the one with the broken finger, but it always seemed that the broken finger spot was right where I wanted to adjust the drag. Annoying. If they hadn't been able to replace it, I'd still be fishing with the broken finger drag star. Yes, I h...

Re: Will this drag star fit a CH 51MG?

If you're talking about the older MG50's, their drag star is plastic. I broke a finger off one of mine, and Shimano had replacements. That was shortly after they stopped production of that reel ( :crying: :crying: :crying: ), so they may no longer have them available, but I think it is probably wort...

Trokar hooks

Trokar touts their triple cutting edge sharpening.
I remember when Owner came out with their cutting edge hooks. There was a big hue and cry about the hooks cutting too big a hole on the hookset.
How are Trokars that different?

Re: Tatula TT Product Review

I don't know how TT can do the great job they do in field testing reels for a length of time before they are available to the public, and providing us addicts with thorough reviews to help us with our decisions concerning which reel to buy next, without the manufacturers help in supplying reels long...
