Re: What to do with broken JDM Destroyer?
personally I would strip off the reusable components, get a half decent blank and have a custom rod built. nothing fancy, to keep cost down, a dedicated kayak rod. can even have the builder install clip on it to attach a lanyard for the yak.
anyways bummer story, good luck

Re: Phenix Bass Recon Elite vs St. Croix Legend Elite
im a phenix guy. either recon will serve you well for jigs. I tend to go 1/2 oz or lower for most of my jigging, for this I prefer a MH, but that's my preference. as for chattaerbaits I throw them on x-10. really heavy grass situation ultra mbx 7 foot mh.
good luck, let us know what you end up with.

I turn wrenches for a living so I use mostly snap on tools I already have. I also use the blue tape of electrical tape to avoid scratching surfaces.

You can always have one installed. any tackle shop that wraps rods can it. just pick the style of hook keeper you prefer. its really inexpensive.

the fishing part isn't the problem I think, at least for me. on the other hand I might have an issue with the tackle hording.

Please excuse my ignorance but can't they use existing machinery and tooling to produce the smaller reels using inferior/ cheaper materials?

Re: Higher end BFSish reel: Scorpion 70 BFS, Aldebaran 50, SS SV105, or ??
probably cheapest way to get into this from what im reading. take your 50e stick a shallow spool and hedgehog air bearings in it. look for a used or new phenix recon, recon 2, elite...682 to put your reel on and go have fun. should still be in the $300 ball park, maybe a little more if you go with a...

I use a 4'6" spincast rod for bluegill in local ponds. rod and reel combo $35. last year I put on a curado 50e with bfs spool and bearings. its a fun little set up.
