Re: Boat Question?
teamdaiwa, Since you indicate that you are familiar with boats already, I also suggest getting the bigger one, like the Nitro or Triton. It will provide more storage and area to fish from, move faster when needed, and offers some of the nicer features that you won't get with the other one. It will b...

Re: How do you know if the pinion gear is bad?
The pinion gear on the Daiwa reels can get burrs in the grooves on its face, which engage with the spool pin. These burrs can affect how succinctly the spool reengages with the pin (e.g. slight delay or hesitation). In very bad cases, burrs on the face itself can keep the pin from sliding on the fac...

Re: Lateral movement of driveshaft (Zillion/ZDV) ???
fishingboy commented: I find it strange that other ZDV (or Zillion) owners are not sharing their views here I don't know what to say, there could be many reasons. For instance: - Most ZDV owners probably still have factory lube grease in the reel, and grease might not make .3 mm play as noticable or...

Re: Service / Drag upgrade for DaiwaS casting reel?
Sony,
I suspect he can, and suggest you PM him. The stock S103HSDL uses 3 carbon-teflon drag washers (unlike the single fiber washer found in the earlier S103 HVLA). Fortunately, most of the drag components are the same as those used in the TD-Z and/or the Sol.

Re: Daiwa TD-Z Drag Upgrade
For the TD-Z spool, you'll need (1) 5x11x4 and (1) 3x8x4 ceramic hybrid bearing: - VXB has Abec 5 ceramic hybrids in both sizes, but they come packed with grease. The grease can be difficult to remove if you don't want to temporarily remove the shields and don't have an ultrasonic cleaner. - VXB has...

Re: Lateral movement of driveshaft (Zillion/ZDV) ???
Just curious... does the amount of play change with different drag settings? Or is it the same when the drag is loose, mid-drag, and even locked down?

steelheadkiller,
You may want to give Abu customer service a call, since that seat # is not listed in their schematics. They should be able to help you find what you need:

Re: omg, why is it so hard to choose a darn reel!!!
You can read the reviews on the alphas and alphas ito in the Review Archive to get more idea of the differences. A big difference from a casting standpoint is the braking on the alphas ito is tuned, unlike the regular alphas or zillion.

njvbass, Your post didn't do much to solve fishingboy's problem and I'm sure he got little value from it. :offtopic: fishingboy, No, that amount of handle play is not normal, and as you say, if it was like that before you would surely have noticed it. I suggest looking at the bottom of the handle un...

Re: Corroded Spool Bearing Removal?
bullet, Spool oils aren't typically applied to the outside of the bearing, so they are vulnerable to brackish or saltwater corrosion. Using a protectant like Corrosion X or similar will help in this situation, but rinsing and drying the reel is still recommended after each trip. Good reminder! Chuck

Re: Corroded Spool Bearing Removal?

Since the pictures in the sticky posted in this section of the forum are not working, here is a another link to the arti...
