The move to smaller, lighter reels has required higher gear ratios just to keep them fishable.
Higher gear ratios (spool revolutions per one turn of the handle) allow smaller reels to pick up line as fast as larger reels. Otherwise, the smaller diameter spools would be very slow.

Sorry I used a bad choice of words to describe that. It made sense to me, kinda like spinning figure skaters who spin faster by pulling in their arms.
