Re: Ester or PE Braid?

Alphahawk, did you get the line? Any conclusions? Thanks. [/quote] I have found the higher you go up in ester line ratings the more manageability issues one has.....I tried a 3# test once. Varivas USA reached out to me and will be sending me a new ester line to try in December. It is supposed to be ...

Yes. Based on your data, the current Vanford is actually about these same outer diameter than many of the previous 1000 Shimanos. But the stroke (width) is a lot less.

Fascinating. I wonder if Daiwa 1000 sizes also change through the years. Thanks for the data.

So it looks like the Vanford 2000 really is larger than the 1000, except for HGFB where it ties.

slipperybob, you are welcome. I am glad that at least one person found the data helpful. (I did not really need these reels but figure I'd get them just so I can get definitive measurements myself.)

Re: Looking for tips regarding a landing net for UL fishing

Agree with those who commented on net material. For C&R, I will only use rubber or silicone net material as it is less abrasive on the fish's natural 'slime' on the scales. Also helps in releasing any barbed hooks caught on it. This may not be what you are looking for due to the shape but I favor th...

TIP for testing line breaking strength

In the past, Alphahawk had used a Japanese line tester. I don't remember what it is called. The challenge is that the line tester had limited range, so if you wanted to test 1 lb v 10 lbs, you could not do it with one unit. Also, with COVID, shipping from Japan has been a challenge. However, I wante...

UL PE Line rating to actual diameter in mm (millimeters)?

I'm curious about PE line ratings in terms of their diameters.

Searching online, I see lists of PE line starting with 0.6. However, I see PE line for sale at thicknesses of 0.14, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4. What is the diameter of those lines?

Thanks for any insight.

Re: Data on Spools: Shimano Vanford 500F, C2000S, 2500S & Observations.

Some one posted in a different forum that the 1000 is 40mm at the outer edge of the lip. So the C200S is definitely a larger diameter spool. And this makes the 500 size at 39.55mm almost identical in diameter. The major difference between the 500 and 100 then is about 1/3 shorter stroke. This is int...

I frequent the Ultralight forum the most so I posted some data and observations there.

Data on Spools: Shimano Vanford 500F, C2000S, 2500S & Observations.

This belongs to the category of pure curiosity for me. Not sure if there's much utility for most people but some data on the Vanford for any who may be interested. Well, I just got in three Vanford in the 500, C2000S, and 2500S to measure and satisfy my curiosity. The 1000 was out of stock or I woul...

Shimano Vanford 1000 spool outer lip diameter?

I just got three Shimano Vanford in to measure. They are the 500F, C2000S, and 2500S. However, I could not get the 1000 as it was out of stock. Question: Does anyone have the diameter of the OUTER edge of the front lip? I've read that the 1000 and the C2000S has the same outer edge lip but I'm not s...

Re: Best Sub $300 Ultralight Spinning Reel

As to 500 or 1000, I think it may depend on the line used as the 500 is lighter and may balance the rod better. If one is using UL braid, the spool size makes no difference in casting distance. Just my opinion...:)

Re: Best Sub $300 Ultralight Spinning Reel

My impression is that the Shimano Vanford 500F is cheaper but potentially improved over the Soare 500? Not sure but that's my impression. I had the Soare 500 a long time ago but did not keep it because I prefer 1000 reels but I was curious about the reel. I have a Vanford 500 coming in a couple of w...

Re: Ajing rods for rigs under 1 g?

I've handled (not fished) and measured 4 of the Eradicators including the 6' 7" and are VERY impressed by them. I don't have the 6' 9" but would go with FTL's comment. The 6' 9" is even lighter power than the 6' 7" at XUL. The only rub is that it is not an ajing action (fast).
