Re: Vintage UL Gear Catch

A Mitchell 409 with a Garcia Brown Conolon rod was my first nice ultralight outfit. I can't recall the rod number, but it had a screw type reel seat, it was a bit faster action than the shorter Garcia rods. Seems like it was a 5'6" rod, a two piece that had a ferrule at the lower third of the rod. M...

Re: ultra light trout rod

I have several Loomis including a TSR 681-2 and the newer TJR 720S. The TSR is the 5'8" two piece and it's a nice lightweight rod, sensitive and I love the handle..very comfortable. I fish mostly small streams with inline spinners. For ease of transportation I prefer a two piece rod. I have a TJR 72...

Re: G. Loomis GL2 TJR782-2

I have the GL2 TJR720S and like it a lot. It is a very light rod with a much improved reel seat, but the handle diameter is still small and not as comfortable as the TSR series. I'm not entirely happy with the way the reel seat fits to the reel foot, maybe due to the small diameter.

Re: Bait alternatives for trout?

The Berkley Trout worms work well. I thread mine with a #10 Mosquito hook that enters near the front of the worm and exits the bait near midway. Similar to the hook placement on the San Juan worm fly. A strike indicator might help with detecting a bite.

Re: TSR681-2

I've had my TSR 681-2 since about Feb of 2010. I use mine for trout. I put a Stradic Ci4 1000 on it and am really amazed what a comfortable outfit it is to cast.

Re: Dream UL combo

I like my Loomis TSR681-2 with a Shimano Ci4 1000. Good all round combo..

Re: My new Ultralight Rod - TSR791

I've been fishing a 681-2 since they were introduced. After trying a Sustain I actually preferred the balance of the Ci4 1000. Sure is a nice series. A 740-2 might be in my future...

Re: Ultralight

I've been fishing ultra-light spinning gear since the late 60's, so I've gone through a lot of equipment both good and bad.

My current favorite is a Loomis SR841-2 IMX w/ Stradic 1000. It has been a real eye opener for me, the longer length is a real advantage.

Re: Quantum Xtralite XPS00 w/ XPS Rod

I wound up with the Loomis SJR720 IMX matched to a Stradic 1000. I really like the crisp action. It is not too much for the 1/8 ounce inlines and will certainly be a nice addition to the quiver.

Best,
JB

Re: Quantum Xtralite XPS00 w/ XPS Rod

BillyBass, Since I already have a pretty decent ultralight, I have considered the SJR720 in IMX for the Stradic. The SJR720 might double as a small stream bass rod. My primary spinning method for trout is inline spinners. Seems the SJR720 might work well for 1/8 ounce lures, but other than "wiggling...

Re: Quantum Xtralite XPS00 w/ XPS Rod

Thanks... I didn't want to seem an equipment snob but wanted some good information on the durability. I tend to keep rods/reels a long time (I still have and use an Orvis Full Flex 5' glass rod with an Orvis 51A reel that I bought in 1975) and normally buy quality equipment. The older Quantum reel a...

Quantum Xtralite

I want something cheap to carry with me when I travel. I bought one of the little Quantum 00 reels with a 4'6" Quantum rod quite a few years ago (over ten) and it's been a decent outfit that's caught a bunch of fish over the years.

Thanks,
JB
