Re: Best 7'6" Composite Deep Cranking Blank?

depends on your definition of composite, since any fishing rod could be considered a composite :) Are you looking for a fiberglass or "graphite"? 4c710HM would be my choice trim to taste! The action is faster than the "moderate" rating that stcroix has on the label. I measured the tip angle at arou...

Best way to coat the first foot of braid to prevent tangling

Hey guys. I love to fish braid on top for fast moving fish. Unfortunately, my braid wraps around topwater hooks, as well as spinnerbait and buzzbait frames. I don't feel the braid scares these fast moving fish and I hate using leaders. Do any of you have any ideas on a coating that would stiffen the...

Re: rear hook hanger rationale

I custom wrapped an open ended hook hanger on my Loomis dropshot spinning rod above the handle to the left. I was surprised that the line would catch on the hanger on the cast. Make sure the that an open ended hanger is on top of a spinning rod if you put it in front of the handle. I prefer a drop s...

Best 7'6" Composite Deep Cranking Blank?

I am ready to build a deep cranking rod. My rod box in my boat tops out at 7'6". I prefer a little faster flex, if possible, and I like to error on the stiffer side for DD22's and Series 6 cranks. I won't be throwing smaller cranks on this rod. The Phenix X-13 looks like a possibilty. Do you guys ha...

Re: tatsu opinions

Tatsu handles great, but it is not the most sensitive fluoro. You will really notice how less sensitive it is than Shooter.

Re: Berkleys 100% florocarbon

100% is a quality line. It has a large diameter for the test rating, but it is on the more sensitive side. It has what I would call average knot strength and average abrasion resistance. It handles okay for a fluor on spinning, but not nearly as well as Sniper or Invizx. I used it for two years on s...

Re: Reel choice for Buzzjet and small SBs.

The smaller punkers work well on 50lb braid, which has the diameter of approximately 12lb mono. Most standard sized baitcasters hold plenty of line. I throw mine on a 50th Anniversary Zillion and a heavy action 7 foot rod. The 7.3 ratio is sweet for picking up line when you want to get your lure in ...

Re: spinning reel anti-reverse bearings lube?

It looked like my Sol's came with a light grease in the anti-reverse bearing. So, I asked a guy at the Daiwa service dept. and he said oil is fine. Sometimes the anti-reverse lever may not engage properly. Old and sticky lube at the lever can also cause problems with spinning reels.

Re: Post Your weirdest catch ever

I caught a pair of ladies underwear in Copper Canyon at Lake Havasu (no one was in them  ). I have caught several turtles and golf towels at golf course ponds. I caught a lawn chair in the marina at Lake Perris. I caught what looked like a beer can by the bait tanks in Newport Harbor only to ha...

Re: Sufix 832 - short lifespan in my experience

832 seems to get fuzzy quicker than other braids. I have only used the 50, but I felt like I needed to turn it around after only about 10 hours of use. Sufix needs to work on their coatings for braid.

Re: Ultimate Frog Reel

I have been throwing frogs with my Zillion 7.3 50th Anniversary for the last few years and it seems unfair. I have caught a couple of fish over 10 with it and the fish didn't even have a chance. You can get your bait back amazingly quick. I haven't fished the Steez 7.3 though.

Re: Is it Daiwa, Shimano, or someone else?

I worked at a tackle shop while in college in the late 1980's and early 1990's. We sold a lot of both Shimano and Daiwa, and we were a Shimano certified service center. I was the go to guy for all reel tuning and repair. One reel manufacturer was, and still is, the most reliable day in and day out. ...

Re: What reel speed do you like for spinner baits

A 6.3 Zillion gets my call for slow rolling blades at night or for spinnerbaits in stained water that are fished all the way back to the boat. I use my Anniversary 7.3 Zillion for fast moving boiling fish and in clear water where I don't usually fish the bait all the way back to the boat. I like to ...
