I have done it and sure there is risk. I personally wouldn't touch an expensive rod I do not own.

Wrap some (masking) tape on both ends of the reel's foot. Keeps away scratches too.

One of my HLC spools made clinking sound. This sound was caused by one of the two plastic pieces that push inductor outwards. Added some oil to the piece.

But I've checked my Ito's spool and there seem to be too tight tolerances for these pieces to move freely.
