The Phenix M1 72H is what I use as well. Sometimes for the swim jig or chatter style bait I will use the M1 74MH.

For reaction and big top water to 3/4 I would look at the X11 or if you want a little longer rod the X13. They are one of th best super spook rods I've used. And still work a jerkbait and other reaction baits like Blades extremely well.

Fished a LOT of different rods. And so far the most sensitive BY FAR has to be a Custom Phenix K2. but since you said under $300.00, I would look at the Phenix Ultra MBX like mentioned above!
