Re: Found my new favorite setup for specks
Whoa, that's a NICE day of fishing! Great looking fish and tasty!! Did you get a custom zbone or is it one of their off the shelf builds? I want to revisit the castaway when my type r spring for my coastal sv gets in, the reel didn't have good distance casting so we'll see if this does the trick.

Re: Found my new favorite setup for specks
Got the job done with my dad for father's day, no Gators but good nonetheless especially for inshore fishing in June. My dad hadn't been inshore fishing seriously in over 20 years.

I use the castaway on my coastal sv, the tw1516 has jbraid grand on it. I originally used my kistler klx in the salt but I didn't like the rust that formed on the hook keeper etc. It's the isr693, med-lite power, extra fast.

Very true, I haven't tried samurai yet, there's some 300yd spools on Amazon right now for $30 that are tempting me.Cal wrote: ↑Mon Jun 22, 2020 12:08 pmAt least both versions of JBraid are way more affordable than Samurai!doomtrprz71 wrote: ↑Mon Jun 22, 2020 8:57 amI wish I hadn't committed so hard to the original jbraid x8...

Re: How you guys liking the Daiwa x8 grand?
I have only fished with the Xplasma Asegai once so I'm going to give it another chance. Much different lines... i couldn't get past the heavy coating on Asegai. My issue with the asegai has been break offs way above the leader, I haven't paid attention to the coating much but haven't fished it much...

Re: How you guys liking the Daiwa x8 grand?
I'm using the 30lb and haven't had issues with it holding water, granted it's in saltwater not fresh. I ordered two spools, one blue and one grey both 30lb and had to send the blue back to be replaced, it had some weird stuff going on with it. The replacement spool and the grey have been great so fa...

Found my new favorite setup for specks
During the coronapanic I social distanced to St Mark's Florida and had a blast, but as the saying goes you have to pay to play. Mid cast my beloved St Croix legend inshore decided to snap in half. During this time St Croix wasn't answering the phone for warranty claims, so I found a great deal on an...

Re: Braid causing gear wear?
This is why all my new high speed reels with be 7:1. That's plenty fast for me. I even get sketched out over 7:1 brass gears. I have a couple of 7:2 reels that got very rough soon after I bought them. I replaced the gears and the same thing happened again. I then put 6.2:1 gears in them and they st...

Re: Why doesn't Daiwa & Shimano Cerakote their reels?
I'd say cost and itar, they have trouble doing the coating overseas. Cerakote can be cured in a hour with an oven, duracoat requires longer to cure. Plastic takes longer to cure with cerakote but it's still a couple of hours.

Re: gears for baitcasters
I would say no, most of the "cold forged" gears in spinning reels that are cast zinc aren't as precise plus it would make more sense to cut helical gears for finer teeth. They could use a cold forged alloy but I'm sure something like 7075t6 or 6061t6 would be a lot cheaper and be plenty strong and w...

Re: gears for baitcasters
It amuses me that alot of gears in spinning reels claim cold forged gears that are usually cast zinc. I would think cold forged gears would be cost prohibitive for a baitcasting reel.
