Re: Changing Spools in a STX?
What year is your STX? If it has dual braking, it must be replaced by a '10 or later premier spool. They do fit, hell, even my inshore spool fit in a buddies stx, but 2 different braking systems.

Its the MGX and Scorpion DC for me. It might just be my first JDM and DC reel depending on the review.

Re: Is the MGX saltwater safe?
Abu also sold me on the Revo Inshore for Specs right after i moved down to the coast.... I havent even had a bull red pull more than 75 yds of line off this thing. If you ask 5 different people at abu, im sure you will get 20 different answers, after all.... theyre sales people.

Re: Is the MGX saltwater safe?
The water here in Texas has a much higher salinity than most other areas. I would bet with regular maintainence that brackish is ok, but I would still be cautious about water like we have here.

Re: Is the MGX saltwater safe?
When you look it up on abus website and click on saltwater, the MGX shows up. BUT, anything magnesium and saltwater are not good friends. Even if its coated, ive seen holes eaten in the frames of Cores if not cleaned properly every trip. This is the only thing that concerns me.

Re: Reel for Phenix Recon 712L
Seems like the 51e is where i should be looking. Going to go ahead and do a abec 7 bearing and carbontex drag upgrade right out of the gate. I also found a Daiwa Sol on the auction site although it does not have CRBB.

Re: Reel for Phenix Recon 712L
The 51e is sounding good at the moment, does anyone have any experience with the Chronarch or calcutta at the mentioned weight ranges? Also, i know the chronarch has ARB bearings but it is unclear if the calcutta te 101GT does.

Re: Reel for Phenix Recon 712L
I did not know this. Although i thought this was a magnesium based reel. Im down in south texas and the salinity in our bays are about 10x higher then most other bays. Being that this reel will have a very high probability of being completely dunked at some point in its life.

Re: Reel for Phenix Recon 712L
I considered the MGX but 1. no left hands available domestically and 2. its out of the approved price range
I also considered a abu morrum 1601 with IVCB but was told that they have a heavier spool than any of the 3 reels i mentioned above.

Re: STX / Premier
weight reduction and corrosion resistant bearings. The STX has HPCR bearings as well. The premier is overall lighter, has eva knobs and thats about all i can think of. Re: Reel for Phenix Recon 712L
For something that light, I'd opt for the Calcutta or Chronarch. Or the e50 with upgraded spool bearings! Be sure and give a report of the Recon!!!! Thats all 3 of the reels i listed ](*,) i will be sure to do a full review of the recon, if this thing fishes as awesome as it feels ill end up with m...
