Reel for Aklys

I could use some suggestions on a reel to pair with the Megabass Orochi XX Aklys. In cold water months I plan to use this combo for small swimbaits (1 - 1.5 oz, braid to leader), but most of the time I will have a punch rig or heavy jig tied on. I generally lean towards Daiwa, but it seems like eith...

Re: Finesse Fishing.com

Just in case you're in need of a different way to catch fish, he has another site, tenkarabum.com, that is super informative. Lots of cool JDM gear. I'm planning to order a tenkara rod for some trips to the driftless area next year.

Re: What's next for Daiwa...

I was excited when I saw so many new posts here, what a let down. Can we get this thread back on track?

I'd pick up darn near any variant of the new Tatula 100 frame that doesn't have the spider logo plastered all over it.

Re: What are You PUNCHING with?

Snagged a used Megabass Orochi XX Aklys with the plastic still on the cork from eBay for just under $200. I've only had a chance to pitch a 1 oz jig around in the back yard and make a few casts with a swimbait at a pond on my way home from work, but my first impression is a very positive one. Just f...

Re: What are You PUNCHING with?

Will be trying a custom 7'10 H X Ray blank by North Fork Composites. Building a minimum build. Feels like it has a lot of power and the taper continues past a fast when applying more pressure. Also build a "unique" finesse punching rod using a 7'6 High Modulus flipping blank from NFC and I extended...

Re: cranking rod

Another vote for the Dobyns Champion 704CB here. I would stick with the 4 power if 1.5 squarebills are on the upper end of your intended use. Great rod for 1.5s, DT4s, and jerkbaits (I use braid to 12# leader).

Re: Zodias glass rod action

I also hated the 7'6" Crucial model, the Zodias is SO much better if you're looking for a smooth glass feel. I bought it with good intentions but hardly ever use it, so I can't recall 100% but I'm pretty sure the blank incorporates glass into the same construction as the graphite rods as opposed to ...

The Daiwa Tatula CT Type-R is on clearance, is there a new reel in the Tatula lineup on the way?

Re: Cleaning Rods

I use soapy water on the blank and guides, and mr clean magic eraser on the cork. I try to stay away from any harsh solvents that may deteriorate the adhesive or resins. x2 on the magic eraser for cork. I bought some U-40 over the winter, and the magic eraser made all of my cork look brand new befo...

Re: Levante Spinnerbait Special, Super Orochi XXX?

Thanks for the feedback - I was sort of expecting this kind of response given the reputation of the first gen XX rods. I'll start keeping an eye on eBay. The Super Orochi XXX also looks intriguing. Any opinions on the Super Orochi (primarily for single hook moving baits)? I'd keep an eye on The Tac...

Re: Levante Spinnerbait Special, Super Orochi XXX?

The 1st gen spinnerbait special is one of my go to rods. I like it so much that I bought a second when they went on sale. It balances well and makes a good multi purpose rod for a handful of different things. I would keep an eye out for one being sold used. eBay will often have them come up for sal...

Levante Spinnerbait Special, Super Orochi XXX?

Right now I'm using a Dobyns Fury 663C for fishing close quarters with spinnerbaits and buzzbaits (3/8 oz max). For such an inexpensive rod I've been really happy with it, but I'm looking for an upgrade - something just a little heavier but still under 7'. The new XX lineup doesn't include the Spinn...
