Re: Swimbait line ...

Thanks for the heads up fellas , probably 50lb better to connect to 20/25 lb. is it okay to go 8 down and 8 up? Anymore than that it’s hard to cinch... I'd go 65. 50 can break on a backlash, especially with 4oz+ baits. It'll be fine with 20/25 imo. For the Albright/Alberto knot, I go 7 up and 7 dow...

Re: Swimbait line ...

Straight 20lb or 25lb fluoro (Shooter, sometimes Tatsu) on everything other than big walk-the-dog type baits. I go with straight 65lb braid (Maxima or V2 SS) for those.

I'd only use the Alberto knot if I were to go braid to leader.

Re: Favorite type of topwater bait?

Frogs. It's become my favorite topwater, really fun to fish when using the Steez XBD Frog Rod or AGS 7'4" XH. If it weren't for those rods, I probably wouldn't like it as much as I do.

Re: Favorite Established Big Bait Manufacturer - 2020

The crowd ebbs and flows it seems, just like the bite ;) ... nice fish and baits. Too difficult to list individual baits 😂 Thanks, I tend to look for baits that are easy to purchase and cheap. I won't get upset if I lose a $100 bait, but losing some of those $200-$500 baits can get me down for the ...

Re: Favorite Established Big Bait Manufacturer - 2020

I guess not too many ppl throw big baits here. My vote goes to Jackall as their line up fits my style so well. My choice would be different if we were choosing specific baits. Here are some pics of some catches this year. Dowzswimmer 220sf Irod Bailey's Swim, Curado 300E, 25lb Shooter https://i.imgu...

Boy is this list ever out dated
Very interesting though. I was looking at the list and haven't heard of some of those names in years. It's been almost 10 years, maybe an update?

Re: Swimbait reel

Surprised that no one is talking about the new 300 K with its 4.snail:1 gear ratio... The new 4.7:1 300k brings in 29.5ipt (at full spool of course). Not slow at all, should be very powerful with those specs. Perfect all around speed imo, and faster than my 6.2:1 300e. That's based on the Australia...

Re: Dream Jig Rod Build

I also wouldn't use the 764 for jigs. It's more like a medium rod to me, but others have said it fishes like a ML/M. With 2" off the tip, I remember it being more like a M+. I haven't held or measured the SJ 736, but it's probably more powerful than the 764.

Re: Dream Jig Rod Build

Under what circumstances would you want to take the tip of the blank off? Why only two? To change the power or action. 2" off the butt won't make much difference imo, but it's definitely noticeable if taken from the tip. One thing I sometimes do is have my customer hold the blank like he's fishing....

Re: Old School GLX (pre 2012) vs. Today's Rods

The 843 and 844 glx's been in my rotation for over 10 years. I feel they're just as good as today's rods and imo better than the newer glx's. I've had just about every variation from the older Wiebe reel seat ones to the newest version. Sensitivity wise, there are a few rods I feel are better, but I...

Re: Dream Jig Rod Build

What’s a slow spiral? I guess it's not the proper term or anything, but I spiral my rods slower than most builders that I've seen. Most builders would probably agree that the line needs to be spiraled before the bend of the blank, but I don't feel that way for bass rods. For the boat rods that I bu...

Re: Dream Jig Rod Build

Phenix K2 736 blank How do you like that blank? It's the only one I haven't played with. I've used all the other K2 blanks. The stand out for me is the 764 with 2" off the tip. And to keep on topic.. Blank: K2 715 Length: 7'1" Guides: Fuji Titanium SIC. LN 7, 6, KB 5, KT 5's to tip (KG torzite) slo...

Re: Clean Epoxy Tips

There are a few different methods that I've heard of being used to get the straightest line. I personally used my power wrapper and make the lines at high speeds (200+rpm), but that doesn't work when the blank isn't fairly straight. If the blank isn't straight, I'll free hand it or use my other hand...

Re: Swimbait reel

I prefer a 300 sized reel myself, but there's an argument for 400 sized reels. Some of the hardcore guys prefer a 400 sized reel for a more consistent line pick up. If you're looking at the tranx, definitely look at the 5.8:1 as opposed to the 7.6:1. The 300/400 5.8 gets 30ipt (inch per turn) while ...

Re: Power ratings on new NFC X-Ray blanks?

The 732 sounds like it fishes lighter than yours. Definitely wouldn't fish a 3/8 oz jig with it. Tip is very soft, relatively whippy, and can protect light line well. In stock form, it's pretty close to a BFS type of blank - at least right in the middle of that and a power finesse type blank. It fi...
