Re: crappie magnet for trout

I have pitched the little .7 gram jig head quite a lot. It works well with some decent distance on light tackle. Regarding dock shooting, you need a rod that loads up well, then usually a plastic bait where you have something to grip and release away from the hook itself. Some artificials "shoot" be...

Re: Steez 17 spinning reel

It is just a beautiful reel . . . look forward to hearing more about them, more pics once they are mounted on rods, strung and ready for fishing.

Re: Your top UL baits

The little Creme baits I find at Walmart are really great with a black body and chartreuse tail. I have caught bluegills, crappie and LMBs with it. Another great choice is a simple Mepps Plain Aglia in the ultralight size (00, I think they call it). Silver is great. It has a lot of flash and they'll...

Re: Light line leader connection

Shin's is just another form of Alberto/Allbright knot. It follows the same entry into the leader material loop, but he forms a second loop at the far end . . . not to materially change the knot, it doesn't, but to allow it to be wrapped "backward" to the entry point without the barrel rolls slipping...

Re: Almost a kayak . . . better than a kayak?

The Meyers version is very stout. Mine is several years old and nary a dent. It shows no "oil canning" or flexing when I stand in it (>250 lbs.), when I grab a gunwale, or hang a large TM off its transom. Very solid . . . but go with the American version. The Canadian version is lighter and I'd rele...

Almost a kayak . . . better than a kayak?

https://www.meyersboat.com/files/images/Sportspal/S-13/top.png I returned home after hours driving in a car, needed some air and a good stretch, so I walked down to the boat house where I keep a Meyers Sportspal S-15, a 15 ft. version of the 13+ footer shown here. About that later. But, before I go...

Re: A rod ahead of its time

I bought a G-Rod from a friend (he is here on this forum, too) and it is the company's 2 piece trout series rod. It uses the new graphene material which is the one carbon atom wide material in layers with other rod building materials. I have never felt anything like it. It is super strong yet loads ...

Re: My hunk of junk kayak

You are "wide open" if you plan to trailer and back down ramps to float a kayak. Then, since size is no longer an issue, you have to decide whether you want to stand or not. If so, to be really stable, it cuts down choices quite a bit. Pedal or paddle??? The Native Ultimate FX Propel looks like it'd...

Re: My hunk of junk kayak

Nice report! And, it's likely best to start out this way with an inexpensive kayak, then try a few out when you are on the water with friends or at demos over several months or even a few years. You can't know what you don't know. Three things you MUST determine, I think, take precedence over all ot...

Re: Enthusiast 5'6'' casting rod?

Me, too, fishing from a kayak and certainly if seated. The pick up in casting accuracy is amazing; so is the power from the shorter lever. I have both a 5'6" St. Croix in a spinning and a casting reel, medium power. I love them both. For heavier work, I have a 6 '0" medium heavy and I like it, too. ...

Re: 2017 Jackson Big Rig Review

Michael, I use a Werner Shuna Hooked Carbon straight shaft paddle. I thought it was a 255 . . . but I think it is actually 250cm. It is a high angle paddle with mid-sized blades according to the information about it. For a Meyers Sportspal S-15 canoe I own, much wider than the Big Rig, I use a Bendi...

Re: 2017 Jackson Big Rig Review

Both pedal and paddle propulsions are just great. I have one of each. At first, I thought that pedal kayaks would dominate in kayak fishing tournaments, then someone posted the top ranked kayak anglers in Texas and I was very surprised that both pedalers and paddlers sort of shared the list's top sp...

Re: How many wraps for Alberto knot

Adam, yes, and my 3 wraps on the way back and out to terminate the knot are just to twist the line in a manner to keep the 9 original wraps seated correctly, not so much to supply additional friction from "line to line" contact. One pro angler I saw a video of not long ago has completely eliminated ...
