The Johnnys usually come with a pretty decent drag, but I have seen some extremes that were lacking. If you can get a hold of some carbontex washers, I'm sure they wouldn't hurt it.

Is the drive shaft the same lenth on both brands or is the daiwa shaft a bit shorter? We need to do some expensive research...I've got time if someone...

It's definitely a comfort thing, and with the reels you mentioned and their intended uses (deep cranks, saltwater gamefish, etc.) a power handle helps a lot. I haven't seen a whole lot as far as dress-up knobs go for these brands. Most of the things I have seen for them are discontinued and no longer in production.

I've seen plenty of smokes go across the counter, and none have had these problems. All I can think is maybe the booth or store you got it from got some discounted reels from Quantum and sold them at regular price. Or maybe Quantum has something against Canada. I don't know, but like slipperybob men...

I'm suprised to learn that Daiwa has sales reps...I've never met one before...I do know a few of their local pros, but never met a rep.
