the st. croix 70 mhm is a close match.
when I first came across the 845, thought I might miss that extra inch, as well...and looked hard at the croix mhm......now, after fishing the 845 a few years, I wouldn't go back to the longer handle.

imo, the main reason is the slower gear...some of the smaller baits (beetle spins, micro rapalas, etc.) just seem to pull better to the slower gear of a 500 than a 1000.

have a set of the older steez' and the newer core 50's. the steez seems sturdier and smoother pulling the heavier baits, tho I suspect the core's 7:1 gear may be more the teller of that tale over the 6:1 in the steez' I own...for that reason (and ergos), I tend to use the steez' more for tip-down an...
