Re: What key features define great cranking reels?
Smooth drag and excellent casting of 3/8-1 1/2 oz baits. Describes most newer baitcasters, especially if you upgrade them with carbontex drag washers. DaveJ Depending on what size cranks you're talking about, I'd add line capacity and reel weight. There is nothing that takes the fun out of throwing...

Re: Reel for Swimbaits targeting Stripers and LMB...???
Another reel to consider is the Shimano Cardiff 300.
Good reel, great price, good warranty:

Re: Reel for Swimbaits targeting Stripers and LMB...???
I have a Calcutta 300, and it is heavy. Throwing swimbaits all day with it is work. If I had the money, I'd look at the Quantum Exo 300, in the lower gear ratios. 200yds of 20lb capacity, weighs 7.5 oz. That 3-4 oz difference will show up in fatigue. If I were going to use it in the salt, I'd use a ...

Re: oiling brakes works
Why am l only now learning about this? Too soon old, too late smart. Hahaha I always thought oiling the brakes reduced friction, and kind of defeated their purpose. I guess it depends on how much oil. And I'm told that some of the new centrifugal brake systems require oil to work properly. Go figure...

Re: I've seen the light. low gear ratio for shallow cranks
I prefer a faster reel for shallow cranks. 7.1:1 & aluminum frame/brass gears is a must. (Chron d7 is my favorite). Id rather fish a faster reel slow than a slow reel fast. Especially with cranks. When i have to reel fast, i loose my focus on what the crank is doing. The slower im reeling, the more...

Re: oiling brakes works
You see? It is working. I thought you wont try it. You have no faith! Hahaha Thanks for the advice. It actually worked best on the older Shimano brakes, the ones with the plastic brake sleeves riding on a metal pin, but it did seem to help with the Smoke reels, too, although I was able to cast so f...

Call Daiwa. That sounds like a problem they would be able to help you with.

Re: Longest casting reel
Well, he can certainly generate a lot of momentum for his cast. It looks kind of like the discus whirl that shot putters use now. Of course, I'm guessing his accuracy kind of suffers. Hahaha What would really suffer, is his ability to stay upright & dry in his boat if he plans to cast that way all ...

Re: Longest casting reel
There's a video on YouTube where a guy was using a pendulum cast and a conquest DC and did a 130m cast. Looked to be a spoon and probably 1 oz. I had to find it ^^ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e0qRhA0i4cY Doesn't show the full cast and don't know the overall condition so take it however you wan...

There's a video on YouTube where a guy was using a pendulum cast and a conquest DC and did a 130m cast. Looked to be a spoon and probably 1 oz. I think it depends on what you're throwing. I can just about spool most of my reels with a 3/4 oz spoon. I get down into the backing easily, and I usually ...

oiling brakes works
It was suggested to me by someone here that I oil the brake drum on my Smoke baitcaster, so I called Dan Isaacs at Reelex and asked him about it. He said oiling the drum wouldn't hurt and might help by keeping the drum cleaner. I tried it, and it did seem to help. He also suggested that I try adding...

Re: I've seen the light. low gear ratio for shallow cranks
how much line u have spooled up will determine ipt as well Yes, there was a post whereas I suggested that manufacturers have "markers" on their spool for the IPTs when the line is at that level. Just a thought since many old school Daiwas already had a "full capacity" line marking on their spools. ...
