Going to run braid on an SV for the first time. Not a braid fan, bit it is going on a frog combo. Do the SV spools need a mono backing with braid? TIA. Only reason I'd add backing is to prevent slip. Since there's no easy way to know the hardness of the steel, I'll keep telling my cheapskate buddy to give his guides a regular Q-tip check until he gets a decent rod by Shimano ! Sounds good to you?

Cal, I use snaps all the time, systematically removing the split ring from lures that come with one. I'm like to know under what circumstances you prefer to tie to the split ring. Maybe I'm missing something?

Daiwa's T.D.Popper ZERO has been my favorite for years. Good thing I got a bunch way back when it was produced, since you can't find them anymore. Translucent smelt does the job!
