Working a Sammy????

Post by Basspastor » Fri Jun 10, 2005 10:50 pm

So I did it. I bought one of those over priced topwater baits. I won't use it on my lake cause the chance of a pike biting it off are just too good. I tied it on for a tournament last weekend and caught 1 small bass and had a big smallie come up to look but not take it. How frustrating, you pay the big money and then when the money was literally on the line, it didn't draw a strike from a big fish. But then again I'm not sure I've quite figured out how this thing is supposed to be worked for maximum effect.

So how is one suppose to make that lure work it's magic?

It is not easiest bait in the world to walk the dog and frankly I find it's walking qualities to be so absolutely quick and subtle, it seems it could only work in calm conditions. I actually got the one strike and Big Smallie to check it out when I was single jerking the lure causing it to "bob" along straight and make a pop.

Any suggestions would be appreciated, Thanks.

BP: Here is an article that goes into how the author works one. They will catch L/M Bass.

Ive got one and have had great success on them. Give it some time and when you learn the quarks about the bait you can use it to your advantage. Cant always expect great things right out of the start and just cause they cost 15 bucks doesnt mean they will catch every bass in the lake :P

Once you get used to it, they walk great, but still not the best action I've seen. They also seem to cast better than most topwater baits I use, and they look good, yet, still no fish. I've only used it a few times though and I expect it to come through soon.

Thanks for the Article, maybe reading it will help a little.

Anyways I was on Mille Lacs a couple of days ago and it got calm in the late afternoon, perfect for Smallies on topwater. Once again the Sammy was a huge disappointment. I got 6 on other topwater lures but none on the Sammy and I threw it a fair amount in the same places I was catching the other fish.

A Rapala Skitter prop got a 4lber

and the Frenzy Pop got two that were 4lb's, one of which was 19.75 and may even been a 5lb fish.

Either that lure starts performing soon or I'm demanding a refund, for goodness sakes I could have bought 7 Frenzy Poppers for the same price and I've never bought one that doesn't stone cold catch fish like crazy.

How good are you walking the sammy?
I'd try spinning gear if you're having a hard time with casting.
Mono line I find gives better action.
You have to find that repetitive motion that gives it a good side to
side action. Timing is very important here.

I don't know that I've really figured out walking it yet. I would say I'm very good at walking Spooks, Chug Bugs, Frenzy Walkers, Skitter Pops and SpitNimages and down right amazing with what I can make a Berkley Frenzy Popper do (but you usually don't have to do anything with the Frenzy but slowly pop it.)

There is no problem casting the Sammy, it flies. I use a light fireline on baitcasting gear for topwater and have braid on all the rest of my rigs and I'm not gonna switch for 1 lure. I can make it walk with quick jerks pretty well, but can't seem to get a walking action consistantly on a slower cadence. I also can't make it slide very far to one side, maybe the popper cup rules that movement out much like it does on the Frenzy Popper where a max og 6-8inch slide to one side is about all your ever gonna get.

I'll be heading out soon and give some the article suggestions a try tonight.

Well that lake I went to was a new one and kind of a dud overall so I didn't learn anything. I only scratched out a few fish as it was, most out of heavy cover.

"maybe the popper cup rules that movement out"

IMO, that's a very shallow "cup"....what am I missing :) ?

Here is an article from Bassmaster that I thought you all would like.

Walkin' dogs for summer bass

Wanna put a leash on some giant largemouth? Use these techniques and you'll give plenty of lunkers more exercise than they want . . .
