Help with approx. length/girth of fish
Help with approx. length/girth of fish
I caught a really nice largemouth today and didn't have my scale so I was hoping from this picture maybe you guys could help me figure out length and girth so I can get an idea of how big she was? More so the girth.
I have pretty much figured out the length which I basically measured from the rod. The cork alone is 15in from butt to end of foregrip. I came up 20in from mouth the start of tail (not sure the tail counts in total length for estimate) should I factor in to the end of tail?? Probably would add an inch. I am more curious if someone can help with approx. girth. I can say those knobs are 3.5cm long or 1.38in. The reel itself from side plate to end of handle nut is 3.75in long.
This may be my PB Largemouth so I want to know approx. the weight. She was and still is a pig.

Re: Help with approx. length/girth of fish
Florida guesstimates going off lengths
21- 6
22- 7
23- 8
24- 9
25- 10
26- 11
These have held pretty true give or take unless the fish is "rail" skinny (yours is not)
I have caught a fish that measured 25 1/4 and weighed 10.6 #
and a 26 1/2 that weighed 11.4#
My PB was a 27 1/4 but no scale available (so no confirmed weight) she had to be in the 12# range
Very nice fish. Congrats.

Thanks!
Someone from a local forum used software for measurements and the fish calculator gave me 6.27lbs. Using the calculator is I know just an estimate but one thing is for sure this is my PB bass.

I would have guessed upper 5s - 6lb
Re: Help with approx. length/girth of fish
Next time you catch a fish and don´t measure it with a tape:
As you did, use a known measurements object for comparison and from the tip of the jaw all the way to the tip of the tail lengthwise,
For the girth width widthwise, from the joint of the dorsal fin with the body to the belly.
In my neck of the woods fish are short and fat a 20 incher ( you didn´t measure the tail ) would normally measure half of the length in girth so it would be around 20 " length by 10 " girth would be more or less between 4 and 4.5 lbs.

Re: Help with approx. length/girth of fish
I had someone from another forum use some software to give me a more accurate length/girth.
The whole tail wasn't part of his measurement.

Re: Help with approx. length/girth of fish
Safe to say its a solid 6lb fish, great new PB
Re: Help with approx. length/girth of fish
Congratulations. It's real easy to get a length with the rod and then estimate the girth. You know when a fish is skinny or fat. I have caught enough of those 6-9lb. fish over the years when I didn't have a scale that I have memorized the conversion chart. I don't usually take the time to weigh a fish that I think is under 8lbs. because it is easy to estimate when I know the length.

A guess from someone just across the river, Id say heavy 5 to light 6, definitely a toad.
Re: Help with approx. length/girth of fish
Length x Girth x Girth divided by 1200 should get you pretty close ,,,,,,,,,,,,,tight lines to all
