After seeing the pic of that monster pike you caught I'll be taking your advice and trying one of these jigs.RWSCHMITZ wrote:BLACK BUNNY HAIR JIG !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Are you using a homemade jig?

I catch 'em on kalin mogambo's, & other action shads, spoons , very little on crankbaits, but that lies in the fact that i dont fish with crankbaits at all, because my experiance is that you miss al lot of fish on this type of lures.
spinners are great too!
But , keep it small & full of action!

As my fishing seasons go by, I find myself using fewer crankbaits every year and using single hook baits more frequently. I've loaded up on Kalin grubs and Storm Shads this year as well as tied a bunch of bucktail and "bunnie" hair jigs. I really intend to focus on them: it is a simple yet technique-rich way to fish.I catch 'em on kalin mogambo's, & other action shads, spoons , very little on crankbaits

sony.
I went down to Blue lake yesterday and landed 9 pike on a red/white w/nickle back 1oz daredevle at a slow to med retrieve. They wouldn't even look at a 5 o' diamonds w/ brass back so they are really picky right now, but on a side note they were not lethargic in any way. When they hit they hit like a freight train.

Man, do I want to feel those hits again! 2 more weeks and I'm free to start my season. It's been a LONG winter and a LONGER time since I've been out on the water. When they hit they hit like a freight train.

I love to fish for pike through the ice, but there's no fight. This time of the year when that water temp hits 50F even the smalls ones fight hard.

Yesterday when I went out for pike, Williams five of diamonds and 4" rapala husky jerk in minnow colour were working great. Either way work your lures slow though, especially after they spawn.
EDIT: forgot to mention, any of those soft jerkbaits like the Yum Houdini Shad in minnow colours, white/black and brown/white are awesome too. I'm sure some of the bright colours like yellow will work well too, but the two I mentioned above are good choices from my experience.

White Jig with white hair, Cleo spoons silver and blue, white spinner baits.

For you guys fishing plastics for pike like a senko, how do you tie your own leaders? I have some leader material but am not sure how to set it up to maintain the slow sink of the senko. Seems that a store purchased leader has too much weight with the clip.
Thanks for any help,
Jason

The Zalt lures work great over here. They have a slow wobble and come in all kind of colors:

The work all year round (except for icefishing of course).
I also use the Salmo Slider, the 7cm is great for both small and big pike aswell as perch, the bigger ones are amazing for big pike:

Those DareDevils were founded in one of my old neighboorhoods (city of Dearborn) and still have the original shop open til this day. Everyone should have atleast one of these.

Here is a question that you can all make fun of this ol' Southern Boy about:
when you get one of these mean-mouthed suckers up to the boat, how do you get it in the boat (or do you?) and how do you handle the fish to get the hook out?
I might be catching one of these in the next week or so and I don't mind telling you that I'm not sure what to do after I land it.
Do I need to have a landing net? some long nosed pliers? a gun? what?
