Correct spelling: does it matter? Depends:

The tow trucks slammed into each other.

Question: How many trucks were there?

Reading that statement isn't the result of the human mind - understanding it is the result of the switch from phonic reading to sight reading in the late 1900s. My first name is Phil and about 25% of the people who correspond with me write it as Paul. They only read the first and last letters.

Yep. Interesting stuff for sure. The English language is complex and consequently spelling (as well as context, language facility, and the reader's expectations) can be very important.

Senkoman85's answer (ignoring the 'duh') is a good example of my point. Could have been just two trucks or 10 actual tow trucks colliding. The sentence didn't stipulate the number. Though I'm not sure, his answer (tow) implies he 'read' 2 trucks.
