Reel Help

Post by buckmaidt » Thu Sep 27, 2007 7:05 pm

I am going to have a custom Loomis MB844 IMX built by drinva. This is going to be used for pitching/casting big jigs, spinnerbaits, and topwaters. The blank has a very wide lure rating at 1/4 - 1 oz. so I think it will make a great multi-purpose rod. Now I want some suggestions on what low profile reel to pair with it. I am looking for something that excels at multi-purpose applications with a wide variety of baits. Thanks in advance for your help.

What sort of money are you looking to spend? If you can afford, it I would highly recommend a Steez.

The alphas would be a good match, its a pretty good all around reel. My one complaint as a jig reel would be its slow line pick up rate. I like to get the jig back fast for the next pitch. Also I have been outrun many times by fish coming at the boat.

You didnt say how big the baits would be but the 843 is a good choice to it is very vesatile to me.
Goodluck!

I will mainly be throwing 1/2 oz. and up. The Daiwa "Big Bait Special" has caught my eye but I don't really know anything about it. Any one got any input on the BBS?

The 844 is a great rod. I think you will really like it for what you are going to be using it for (might be a little too fast action for treble hook topwaters?). I've had a Chronarch 100SF & 100MG mounted on mine for a while and I like that setup. I would imagine the new Metanium Mg7 would be even better.

Same here--I have CH100Mg reels all but one of my 844s because they really balance and palm well on that rod. Any reel in that size and weight range should work well...

The 844c is a GREAT rod. I have two 7'0" "heavy" all purpose rods...the 844c IMX and a 704c Dobyns. They are both very versatile. I have used my 844c for everything from pitching 3/8-1/2 oz jigs, pitching big t-rigs, frogging, big spinnerbaits, big lipless cranks, and c-rigging and it's great at all these things. I have used a variety of reels on my 844c and they all feel good because the rod is very balanced. But some that I would suggest for the 844c is a REVO-STX-HS, Fuego, any of the Metanium reels, Chronarch 100SF, or Calais.

I have a Metanium Mg7 for sale if you're interested in getting 1 of those for your 844c 8-)

Thanks for the replies.

Chuck thanks for the links.

Does anyone know what would be the lightest weight that the BBS could throw?
