Need reel suggestions for Steez rods?

Post by Finnz922 » Sat May 14, 2011 10:46 am

In the past I have only purchased $150 or less priced rods and $300 or less priced reels. Rods - Light and Toughs, S-Series, Iaconelli, Premiers, Mojo Bass, Pro-Z. Reels - Zillion 50th, Crazy Crankers, Sol, Advantage HSTA, TD-X, and Viento. I have recently been blessed with some great values that have come my way. 1- Steez Compile X 7'1"HC, 1- Steez Fle-X-lite 6'5"MLC, 1- Steez Fle-X-lite 6'6"MLS, 1- St. Croix Legend Elite 6'8"MS, and 1- St. Croix Legend Tournament 7'MS. I am looking for suggestions for reels Daiwa preferred but open to suggestions.

I have paired the St. Croix Legend Elite with a Daiwa Advantage 2500 and the Tournament with a Tierra 2500 already. I plan on upgrading those reels with either Fuegos, Steez, or JDM in the future, but right now I want to fill the 3 Steez rods. Some of the reels that I have in mind for the Compile X 7'1"HC are the Pixy Airy Red, Alphas Ito Ai, Alphas R Edition, Steez 103SHA, PX 68, or the Alphas Finesse Custom 105H. For the Fle-X-lite 6'5"MLC I was considering the Presso, Steez 100HA, Alphas Ito Ai, Alphas R Edition, or TD-Z 100M. And lastly for the Fle-X-lite 6'6"MLS maybe the Presso Iprimi 1003, Luvias 1003 or 2506, or Fuego 100A or 200A. I am looking for people who have experience using any of these reels and/or rods? Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.

With all the people with strong opinions on this forum I though someone would put in their 2 cents?

I've had both of the Steez rods you mentioned but not the St Croix's.. Here would be my recommendations...
Compile-X - Steez SHS (no brainer for me)
Steez Flexlite - (a) Alpha ito Ai (if you don't plan to cast anything on this rig where you'll need to take up line quickly) or the (b) Steez 103H (best choice in my book)
I don't use spinning gear much, but have 2 Sol 2500's and a Certate 2500 which basically see seasonal crappie fishing and occasionally when I throw a shakey head... I think if you go the Steez-Steez route for both, you'll be hard pressed to top either of them or find a reel that will work/feel better than the Steez on the Steez... It's just magic to me.. I've had 2 Compile-X's with Steez 103H's on them for several years, and they are Awesome... Good luck.. B

Disclaimer--I'm a Shimano guy but just got a couple of Steez reels (100 & 103 SHAs) that I have used in 4 tourneys and what I have found is that if you plan to cast more than pitch, especially with heavy baits, the Steez 100H may be more up your alley. It is for me (I know I'm a little against the grain on this) but I am chucking a 5/8 oz. football head with 17lb. fluoro on the 100 and it is a dream. 103s are a little more picky/sensitive/irritable (pick your word)...and the 100 holds more line...

My picks in order
Compile X 7'1"- Steez 103SHA, Steez 100SHA, Steez 103HA, or a TDZ 103/105 (never used a PX68... would probably be nice)
Fle-X-lite 6'5"ML - Steez 103HA or 100HA, Alphas Ito Ai, Alphas R Edition, TD-Z 100M or TDZ 103/105.
Fle-X-lite 6'6"MLS - Steez 2500 spinning or a fuego 2500 spinning... (I wouldn't bother with the Luvias, as your paying a huge premium for the exclusivity of JDM, while the Fuego is the exact same reel and can be had for much less money. If you can afford it, I'd go with the steez 2500 or 2508...
