Shimano Aldebaran BFS XG

Post by romans » Tue Jul 16, 2013 8:58 am

Does anyone know if there is any other shimano gear sets that are interchangeable with this reel platform? Like you can swap the gearsets between the 50 sized reels and the 100 size reels etc.
Thanks,

My guess would be no, but hopefully someone can elaborate.

that's a good question. are you looking to go down in gear ratio?

I already have one and am just blown away by what this reel can do.If I had place for second reel with that high of retrieve I would own a second one.Now if a different gear set was available for this reel then there might be room in the stable for a second one of these reels. To answer your question, yes I would like to slow one down.

romans, would you be interested in a potential swap? i have an extra 6.4:1 gearset from my scorpion 1001XT and another extra 6.4:1 set from my chronarch 50E (both gearsets are from new reels i just bought this spring and have very little on them; plus, they were professionally polished as part of a tuning i had done last month). i have them because i just put 7:1 core 50 gearsets into both reels. i could send one set to you (which one depends on whether your aldebaran is lefty or righty) and you could try it and see if it fits. if so, you can keep it and send me your 8:1 gears. if they don't fit, just send me back my original gears. let me know if you're interested.

i actually have a lefty aldebaran BFS XG but i don't want to take it apart to check to see if the scorpion 1001XT gears fit in it because i got it back from a tuning/bearing upgrade/service not too long ago and don't wanna mess with it.

Yes I am the Necromancer...

Anyone know if the gears in the 2012 Aldebaran BFS XG are aluminum or brass?

Japan Tackle lists it was high tensile brass gears... strange that all other high gear Aldebarans (MG7) from this timeline were aluminum and the new Aldebaran BFS since 2016 are also all aluminum.

FWIW, I have a set of Brenious 7.7 brass in my Scorpion 1000XT and those gears have proven to be pretty smooth and strong thus far.

Pretty sure its aluminum at 5.2oz. That’s lighter than the Aldebaran Mg. They have the wrong gear material listed for the Stile SS as well.

Japan Tackle has done that several times since '07, when I joined TT.

Yep, and won’t change it if you tell them it’s wrong. I just had experience with the Stile since it’s one of the reasons I purchased the reels and was disappointed. Luckily the brass from the Curado 70 work. That Alde BFS would be nice with those 7.7:1 gears.

Well SCHITE that sucks...and from what I understand, the Aldebaran BFS XG has its own unique gears. The other 50 series platforms won't cross over.

You can fit the other 50e series gears in it but need to turn down the nub on the 50e pinion gear to where it is a flat surface. The sideplate of the bfs series is thinner so the nub on the pinion gear will hit the outer spool bearing before allowing the clutch to disengage the spool.

So yes the 50e gears can work with some modification.

Kool! That means a set of 7.7 Brenious should work as well with this same modification of the pinion gear nub.

Where can you get brenious gears? I checked tackle trap and didn't see them. I have a 51e with a yumeya MG spool that I meant to switch the gears in years ago, but never got around to it.
