Pixy rod

Post by Dexter » Sat Aug 24, 2013 6:19 am

I just purchase my first pixy and need a rod. I was thinking of of Dobyns extreme 702. I'd appreciate any input or recommendations.

Thanks

The DX702 is a great finesse rod. It's a bottom contact rod for sure. I use it with 3" tubes, 3" senko, and 1/8 oz jigs for smallmouth. A 3/16 oz jig w/ a jr paca craw is about the rod's max lure weight. If you want to fish slightly heavier lures, then you might want to bump up to the DX742.

x2 regarding the DX702. Great rod. Also consider the Phenix Recon 713. I have my Pixy on this rod. Good sensitivity and I use this with shakey heads, finesse jigs and small spoons. Balances well and a lot less than the DX.

I would tend to agree with Darrin on the recon 2-713...I was in your boat a month ago with a brand new pxr...mounted it on a recon 2-682 and though I'm very pleased with the package,I wish I would have bought a #3...still it's a really nice rod...been using it with 1/16 and 1/8 oz t-rigs as well as weightless flukes...good sensitivity, light, perfect balance with the pxr...and Ya,not a terrible price tag...

Rod I would love to own. If I had a Pixy available I would want the EN. Right now my Pixzilla is on a MB Ratlle Viper Technical Game. I am able to throw 1/16th oz flick shake + worm, weightless wacky Senko, 1/8th oz mushroom head with 3" Berkley Ripple Shad, KVD 1.0, War Eagle Finesse Spinnerbaits, sub 1/16 - 3/16 oz T-rigs, Strike King Series 3/3xd, Rebel Pop R, Heddon Torpedo's, LC RC 1.5's, and 1/8th -1/4 oz Shakeyheads. Love that combo!

Love the megabass idea, but the budget sez "go domestic", at least for now. Domestic rods, especially with the labor day sales around the corner, are much more affordable. Thanks for the input and please keep them coming.

How about taking advantage of the Hook up Tackle NRX Upgrade Event and getting a NRX 802C JWR or NRX 842C MBR.

I have my Pixy on a DX742 spooled with 10lb Sunline Sniper. Although it is not a true finesse combo, it throws lighter stuff very well. I mostly use it for 4" weightless Senkos, Tubes, and Flukes. I wasn't sure if my PX68 would have enough capacity for 10Lb Sunline but it has plenty.

I have a Pixy on a Phenix 744...it's rated an MH but fishes like a M...handles very well. I prerer this setup because I fish finesse in heavy grass...but it also works great in non-grass fishing. I tried the Phenix 713, rated as ML, but fishing lighter. It's just too light.
Willing to sell the 713.

Hey BlaineFred,
Thanks for the offer, but I purchased a DX702 from Derek off of the board. I'm somewhat new to bass fishing. With all the raves about the pixy, I had to try one. There aren't any Dobyns outlets in my area so I was going off the board's recommendations. I'm guessing the only way I'll gain the insight and experience is time on the water( gettin' close to retiring). If I find that the combo-pixy and 702- is akin to fly fishing, I'll purchase another rod. I know this is a rod thread, but I've read that some contributors fish a pixy rather aggressively, i.e. heavier rods and weeds etc. I've got my pixy (airy red with the pixzilla treatment from Ian-thanks Tim). What are the some reasonable limits on reel? Thanks for your time and opinions.

NRX 852 and DX 702
Can't go wrong with either one.
You'll love the dx702!

Pretty much the same setup here, except my Pixy type-r is spooled with 8lb Sunline. Great combo for light jigs, weightless senkos and even small cranks like wiggle warts. One of the few non-NRX rods that is always on my deck.
