Megabass MH Texas Rig Rod

Post by SB_NEWBIE » Tue Jan 27, 2015 1:21 pm

Hi all,

I've been doing a lot of searching on this particular forum, but I can't seem to find anything concrete.

I'm looking for a rod primarily for texas rigged plastics (creature baits, craws, etc) with 12lb line. I'll be fishing open water to moderate cover with 1/4-3/8oz weights. I may even use the rod for casting jigs in the same weight range. I've narrowed it to the following models:

X7 F4-76X7 Western Flip
X7 F5-75X7 Extreme mission
X7 F5.1/2-70X7 Diablo Fastmove
Phase 3 F5-70X Super Bandersnatch

The reason for the 7'+ rods is because I need the leverage for the hooksets on long casts.

Anyone own these and used it for the mentioned techniques?

The only one of those rods I own is the X7 F5.1/2-70X7 Diablo Fastmove, and IMO it's too much rod for the weights you mentioned. Based on your list I'd probably lean towards the Western Flip.

I asked the same question a few months ago and the X7 Extreme Mission was recommended. I went with another brand but would choose the Extreme Mission if I was to get a MB based on the description Gary from Tackle Trap. Gary is a great resource for MB rods. I would PM him.

I use the Super Bandersnatch for this reason. I don't fish super heavy cover but for sparce stuff in my neck of the woods this rod is perfect! I mainly fish 1/4-1/2oz T-rigs with this setup and it works awesome for me.. good luck!

I think it's been covered a bit here and Gary is a great place to start since he's been on the water with most MB offerings. Further he's very specific and consistent across posts in his opinion, which I find extremely helpful. I believe he's also stated that he prefers a more stout rod than most so I take that into consideration as well.

Since you have the Nautilus (as mentioned in another post), Gary offers a direct comparison of that rod and the Extreme Mission here:
http://forums.tackletour.com/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=58220

Then you should be able to infer from here how the Western Flip should perform per Gary here:
http://forums.tackletour.com/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=59964

Anything more concrete is going to come you fishing them both side by side... I'm pretty sure that I ended up going the same direction as njbasscat in this instance, but I'd be very happy if I had the opportunity to fish the Extreme Mission too at some point.

You might look at the X7 Bearing Down with the stinger tip. It's an inch short, but has gotten some nice comments on TT. I would call Gary at TTT, he always drives me in the right direction.

Have 2 and love those rods. The Ratteleviper is also nice, but shorter than what you requested. Brian.

Thanks for all of the reaponses. I appreciate it.

Looks like it's between the Super Bandersnatch and the X7 Extreme Mission. I'll keep everyone posted on what I get and how it performs.

Unless u are hard set on megabass an NRX 893 would be hard to beat for bottom contact in this range .

I use the EM and WF. You can't really "crack" a fish with the WF but it let's me put a bait accurately where I want everytime and has plenty of give for playing fish when I drag a football jig with it. The EM will do just about anything you ask it to. The best all around rod I own. Oh and the WF doubles as a great open water cranking rod for me as well.

I have the Nautilus and the NRX 893. I have to say the NRX is my favorite bottom contact so far. I’ve used other Loomis as well as Dobbins, St. Croix, etc… In the ever search for best bottom contact I just purchased the X7 Bearingdown, Destroyer F5ST-611 and the C40 Elseil Destroyer Evoluzion F41/2-610t. Have not fished them yet but have high hopes. With the 893 I can actually feel fish swimming around my bait and have actually snagged a few when they would not pick up.

I have both the 893 nrx and the Diablo spec r and I can tell you they are almost identical in power and taper and feel. The Diablo being a hair softer

Thank you everyone for your response. I appreciate it.

I pulled the trigger on the X7 Extreme Mission. It's a nice light rod and it feels a tad bit less powerful than the NRX 893. However, I haven't hooked a fish on it yet so the performance of the rod is yet to be defined.

Wow the EM x7 feels less powerful than a 893c? I'm am surprised but haven't handled a 893 yet.
