I need a big crank rod!

Post by Teal101 » Wed Sep 30, 2015 3:14 am

I'm looking for a rod to handle cranks 1/2+. Probably wont fish anything bigger than 2oz. Mostly deep divers like the 6XD, but also bigger lipless in the 3/4-1oz range. Wanting something long, 7'-6"+. I've been toying with the FX-710X7. I want something fancy, price isn't much of an issue. I prefer cork handles. Gancraft? Evergreen? Megabass? It will have a Millionaire variant on it ;)

I know the rating is only up to 3/4 but the F4.5 7'11" Tomahawk GTA is great for big cranks. See the TT review here: http://www.tackletour.com/reviewmbF45711gta.html .

I also have the FX710 X7 but much prefer it for big spinnerbaits and larger bottom contact stuff than cranks.

I don't have any experience with these rods, but the first thing that came to mind after reading your post was something from the Black Jungle line, i.e. the Deep Cranking/Slow Rolling or Power Versatile. I'm sure Gary would have some insight.

I have the PV, I want more length.

I've considered the Tomahawk, although they seem a bit heavy. I'm also a big fan of pure graphite crank rods over composites.

Ugh, GLX, I'd have to get a Conquest DC then, my Millionaire would be sacrileges  I didn't even think about them. Have you used the 957? Hows it's upper range?

The Phenix X-13 (7'6") custom build's that I have are light and powerful. This blank is a pleasure to throw all day. The blank can handle two ounce baits, but I throw a lot of 5 and 6XD's, and these are right in the wheelhouse. Eight foot rods are nice, but they are cumbersome on boat decks and in most rod lockers.

I love throwing big deep diving cranks on my 7'6 Phase 3 Nautilus. It cast D20's Deep 6's, a country mile. Plenty of backbone to horse those big fish away from deep structure, yet super sensitive tip to feel every rock on the bottom.

Daiwa Black Label fast moving 7102MHRB. Lure rating goes up to I think 1 1/2 oz. but it can handle 1 oz. Aruku shad and other bio lipless lures no problem. Full cork handle, 7'10", JDM, and Daiwa. What more could you ask for \:D/

Probably not the suggestion you're looking for, but the Launcher tickled my fancy when handling in store.

I've been mulling that one so I can put some coin towards something else exotic  I like my other XX rods a lot. The only thing that worries me is the 1oz max weight, my 765cb has the same rating and 1oz is pushing it on the 765cb. If it's max truly is 1oz it would be redundant in my lineup.

I walked into The Tackle Trap earlier this year to trade a rod and pickup another and they had a near mint SB WP. Since I had just pick up 2 rods I left it. Could not sleep that night and call Gary in the morning. With the SK 10XD & LC 105 mag, deep crank baits are getting bigger. You need a swimbait rod: SB WP sweet.
