Best combo for 1/4oz jigs

Post by Jdmbassman » Fri Oct 16, 2015 11:10 am

Hi all,

I'm more a finesse fisherman and the NRX 893c and Jdream 7.9 is a great combo for 3/8oz jigs and the Nautilus with another Jdream 7.9 for 1/2oz jigs / 6" Senkos.

My question, what's the best rod / reel combo for 1/4oz jigs ?

Sounds like whatever reel would benefit from a Megabass Honeycomb spool ;)

Let me know your choices.

Matthew

For me, an Alphas SV on a 7'3" Daiwa AirEdge gets the nod.

The NRX/GLX 802, X7 Super Eiger, and X4 Super Mirage are good choices for a 1/4oz Jig rod. A Sol or Alphas would be a good choice for reels. I bet the sv105 or a zonda would be pretty sweet on any of these rods.

I'd throw 1/4 oz jigs on the NRX 893/J-Dream combo. 1/4 oz jig + trailer (~3/8 oz total weight) shouldn't really be considered finesse.

True, but with a lighter rod, he would have the option of throwing either a 1/4 oz jig or an 1/8 oz jig.

The X7 Super Eiger is the front runner at the moment however, the Super Mirage has got my attention.

I have 3 NRX, 3 Evergreen, 2 Megabass and 1 St Croix rods so I'm tempted to try another brand. I think I'm ready ;)

What about the Luxxe Oltre or the Poison Ultima ranges ?

It is nice to know that I could pull double duty on the NRX893 but I thought as all the medium action rods are under 7ft that the 7ft 5" NRX 893 wouldn't be ideal ?

As for reels, I have 4 Jdreams, 2 Stella's, 1 CI4+, 1 Aldebaran and 1 Steez SV103 that has the Crazy Cranker Gears specially fitted by Ian Shields (awesome Cranking reel) so again, interested to try something new

I'd personally use the 893 for 1/4 jigs, but it sounds like your wanting to downsize your line size as well as jig size? You'd be hard pressed to find a better rod than the super eiger for light bottom contact applications. It handles a very wide range of line weights, and can handle 1/4 oz vertical jigging. I prefer it with 1/8 oz and a worm but the lake I mainly fish you can walk across with some snowshoes in the summer the weeds are so thick.

I will offer the Luxxe Oltre again... they have a MH 6'9" jig/plastic specific rod, low end of its range is 3/16 oz. If it is anything like its big brother the 70H then you wont find a better rod. If you're curious what they look like, check my thread history and see pics ive posted. Proshop otsuka is the only place Ive found them and it will run you $620 before shipping.

I have the Super Eiger also, it is an amazing rod in the 1/8 oz range but personally I would not fish 1/4 oz jigs with it, I may be in the minority with that opinion though.

For me Super Eiger all the way, Pixy or Alpha. Rod is so light and sensitive.

What about a Shimano Aldebaran BFS XG Limited Japan Model as the reel ?

High gear ratio for bottom contact stuff but only 8+1 bearings. How does the super free spool compare to a MB Honey Comb ?

I guess it depends on the cover and whether a light wire jig like the Pepper Custom Baits Micro Jig. I do lean towards a 1/8 oz jig on the Super Eiger and a 1/4 oz jig on the Super Mirage.

I use a Major Craft MS-X 65ML/RF (3/16-1/2, 8-14#) with a Daiwa SS SV 6.3. It slays. The whole thing weighs ~9.2 oz and is perfectly balanced. You'd be hard pressed to find anything better IMO. Managed to get it together for $390, too, so there's that. It's excellent for a lot more than finesse jigs, too.

So the Super Eiger and the new 15 Shimano BFS XG Limited have won out but not for the 1/4oz jig with trailer I intended but to replace my NRX822 SYR and Stella C3000XG spinning combo that I currently use for 1/8oz Shakey Head, Texas and Jig Rigs.

My question is now, for the 1/4oz Jig with trailer, would I be okay sticking with the NRX 893 and just use a different reel than the Jdream 7.9 with 12lb Sniper that the 893 is currently paired with ?

You could stick with the NRX 893, but I would put a reel like a Zonda, or Alphas or core 50 or similar Shimano reel that would make it easier to cast baits towards the lighter end of what the rod is rated for. I guess it would also depend on how big the plastic bait is your going to put on the jig. Or you could get a rod that is in between the 893 and Super Eiger like the Super Mirage or something similar.

Your going to have to experiment and see what works for you. Tie that 1/4 oz jig on to that 893/Jdream combo and take it out and fish it and see how you like it. Its free to try it first before you buy another rod and reel.
