How to upgrade away from PE Special gold colored parts?
How to upgrade away from PE Special gold colored parts?
Ok, I have decided to get a Zillion PE Special.
But I just can't stand that golden color trim. I like the red color accents of PE Special 7.9 very much, but I am reading here, that it has notably less PE-specialised features than the lower ratio version.
I want the specialised reel, so I just need to replace all the golden parts, that do not affect the PE functionality. Dragstar and such would be no problem, but how about the spool? And how about the collar that holds the handle axis (don't know it's proper name)?
Thanks!
P.S. I even had the idea of buying both and exchanging the body+trim and mechanics between them.

Remove the parts and paint them the desired color, should cost less than purchasing 2 reels

I have the pe special 7.9 and love it. Its beautiful and functional works great for me.

The pe special spool is what makes it the pe special along with faster levelwind

I thought the spool on the red trim model with the non fixed inductor was the superior spool. I thought the 7.9 version had the faster level wind as well.timsford wrote:The pe special spool is what makes it the pe special along with faster levelwind

Ian has been putting this faster levelwind on my Zillions and I/Ps for couple of years, nice upgrade.

Wasn't the golden-trim model the one with PE specialised inductor?
Is there anybody here who can elaborate on the braking systems of Zillion PE reels? Which one is actually better for casting distance and ease?

But then there is this post from another forum, which claims that fixed inductor is bad for casting distance:The 7.9 PE doesn't have fixed inductor either, but Mag force Z actually.
IMO the 7.9 PE is more similar to the 7.9J-Dream than the original PE. I suspect Daiwa has some spare 7.9 gears so use them to make a "new" reel. No Hyper digigear. No so called "Mag force PE" fixed inductor. Nth really special. Someone can just simply drop a Zillion PE shallow spool into his J-Dream and make one himself.
Yes it still has the faster level wind but I wonder how much it helps rather than cutting casting distance. Perhaps only shines when using PE as thin as #0.6, but my J-Dream casting #1.0 PE no problem at all.

The spool also has a different cast control. it uses a fixed rotor which means a fixed brake force across the cast. easier to control lighter lures but the offset is shorter casting distance due to the brake always being 'on'

Or
Just find the red carpet P. E.
spool, level wind, and gears etc and put the in a og zillion

The 7.9 does have the Zillion PE Long Cast Shallow Spool that is available on its own (or a very similar spool). The Gold one uses the spool with the fixed inductor which I don't believe is available as an upgrade part. I think it is generally believed that the Red PE Long Cast Shallow spool is the superior spool, but I've never used the Gold spool so I don't have any real world evidence to back that up.kgasuns wrote:Wasn't the golden-trim model the one with PE specialised inductor?

I don't know much about hyper-digi-gears or whatever. I do know that the gears on my 7.1:1 OG Zillion are my favorite gears of all of the reels I own. I much preferred them to the Zillion Type-R 7.3:1 gears (not sure if they are digi-gears or not). Everybody has their own preference on gear feel though.

Re: How to upgrade away from PE Special gold colored parts?
With what nice or new zillion pe special reels with gold trim parts go for, I'd think it would be easier and cheaper to just pick up an og zillion SHS and source a red pe spool with mag force z. I know the hlc and big bait special had regular magforce, but for a general use reel to cast a wide range of baits I'd much rather have magforce z vs the fixed inductor used mainly for reels designed for heavier 1/2 oz and up lures. Also since you want to change the spool and accent parts to red anyways, it seems much simpler to use the 7.1:1 gear regular reel and pick up the red spool and faster levelwind (if desired), along with any other red cosmetic parts.

The gears in the 6.3 pe special the blue gold one have a stainless steel pinion which is all that makes its gears different from a regular 6.3 zillion. The high speed level winds have been known to chew out and I know of people that have had them changed to a regular levelwind to stop this happening.

I doubt they'd have the issue with LM Bass. I've only had trouble with the level wind fishing high drag pressures with big PNG Bass and Barramundi. It was originally designed for squid fishing, so it's not really suited to real heavy work.lBARRAMANIAC wrote:The gears in the 6.3 pe special the blue gold one have a stainless steel pinion which is all that makes its gears different from a regular 6.3 zillion.
