JDM 2 Piece Rods
JDM 2 Piece Rods
Just wondering if anyone has had any issues with 2 piece rods from Japan. I'm having issues with connecting the two pieces. The top half won't fit all the way - 3/8" of ferrule showing. I can't seem to get the two pieces to butt up together. Last year, I ordered a Shimano Cardiff rod and had to sand down the ferrule to get both ends to butt up.
Yesterday, I received my Tenryu Rayz rod and have the same issue. Is it supposed to be like that or am I missing something here??

They're designed to fit that way.

So the ferrule is supposed to be showing? It doesn't look right.

Could you post a picture? Off the top I would agree with Hogsticker that they are supposed to fit that way but maybe an image would help us understand what you think is not right.

That's supposed to be that way...it's called a spigot ferrule. Traditionally found on nicer fly rods...slowly becoming more common in the bass world and cheaper fly rods. Allows a smoother bend in the rod vs the standard tip over but.

This is why I love TT...great resource/info, folks with a lot of knowledge

Thanks! Guess I screwed up my Cardiff by sanding it....
Re: JDM 2 Piece Rods
Yeah know. Looks like crap. You can always sand it down and epoxy/glue it together. I've thought about doing this to a number of BFS rods I have but at the same time grew to like ability to break the rod down and cart it around easily. Doors are no longer the nemesis they one were.Steez123 wrote:Hogsticker2 wrote:They're designed to fit that way.

I wouldn't sand it unless you intend to epoxy it. Stock, there's some room as the joint wears a bit as time goes by. Plus, if you sand it too much or at a taper that no longer matches the inside of the top portion, you could have a joint with poor surface contact between them...it can make a ticking sound when you cast or wiggle the rod...weakening the rod too.

Have a look, the guy explains the whole thing. There's supposed to be 10mm between the two pieces of rod.

I always wondered why my major craft was like that. Great Rod, but it is weird to have the gap.
Re: JDM 2 Piece Rods
The Century surf rods also have these ferrules.

This explains so much! Thank you once again TT.
