Pitching Reel?
Looking for a knew reel for pitching. Reel will go on either my MB X7 DFM or MB Seven Eleven. Thinking about acquiring a J Dream 7.9. Any other suggestions?

SV103 is very nice for that application

Re: Pitching Reel?
Anything fast. I use the Daiwa Zillion TWS 9.1 for punching and the SV version for jigs. I also have the 8.1 Steez SV TW for T rigs.
The fast reels allow you to burn your lure through the "dead" water and get another pitch faster. It's a small difference but it definitely adds up through the day, allowing a whole bunch more pitches

Anything with a TWS. The ease of pitching is unmatched.
If you prefer a standard line guide, the aforementioned are solid choices.
The classic Zillion Type R won't disappoint either.

I didn't know if an SV spool would limit pitching distance or help.Tokugawa wrote:SV103 is very nice for that application

J Dream is an excellent choice for a pitchin' reel.

A light spool helps low speed presentations. Ideally, a light spool with low line capacity is most ideal for pitching. There is the practical trade-off if there might be instances of casting, so the spool needs adequate capacity for that.Bass Shores 52 wrote:I didn't know if an SV spool would limit pitching distance or help.Tokugawa wrote:SV103 is very nice for that application
The J-Dream or IP is also very capable...Just depends on what you want and desires for price point and cosmetics.

Re: Pitching Reel?
I've pitched plenty with my SV reels. It doesn't hinder the performance anything noticable.
The Tatula SV TW is coming out really soon. It has the 8.1 in left and right and it is 199.

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions. So many reels, so little time!
Re: Pitching Reel?
a scorpion 70 xg needs to work its way into this conversation as its form factor is incredible and it pitches very well. The thing the reel needs imo is a longer handle. Reel seems to like braided line.

Re: Pitching Reel?
J Dreams spool IMO is a bit too fast to be used to pitch or flip baits. I like a spool that is slower. For instance, I use my IP68 for punching, but the spool was no good for that. It was too fast and even with the brakes all the way up needed too much thumb control for using 1 1/2oz weights. (I know, then why use that reel? Because I like the looks. ) So I put a regular Zillion spool in it. I have a TD Zillion that I use for flipping baits (yall call pitching and such elswhere), with a 1/2-3/4oz weight. I used to have a 100M spool in it, but then experimented with the gold PE spool with the fixed blue inductor. That thing has to be the best flipping reel I have ever set up. There is nothing but control on that no matter what I do. And man that thing can flip a bait about 20yds with no worries of line control. I really like the SV103XS that I have, but its nowhere near a good flipping reel as my TD with the PE spool. It served better to throw light baits with 40lb braid with a Steex SV105 spool in it believe it or not. I put a ZPi handle from The Trap, along with a set of Megabass hyper corks, and a Zion drag star. That reel is now as light as my 50E, and can sling light baits a mile. That reel sits on top of a Point Blank Lee Smith Custom Rod and the whole thing is light as a feather. Impressive for a TD Zillion based reel.

Re: Pitching Reel?
Flipping = spool does not rotate; thumb bar never pressed
Pitching = spool rotates at low speed
And yes - certain spools in the 100 frame pitch better than others.

Re: Pitching Reel?
I'm not sure that I totally agree with the slow spool thing. Think that's more of a personal preference. I've known some pretty fast pitchers, successful too.Tokugawa wrote:Flipping = spool does not rotate; thumb bar never pressed

Re: Pitching Reel?
The spool speed is slow relative to an overhand cast.
