BFS and Heavy casting reel?!

Post by Draethe84 » Mon Dec 25, 2017 11:00 pm

Hey guys, I a man currently looking for a reel that can be used for both BFS and Heavier fishing. I was looking into the Abu LTZ AE 74 Racing because it has two spools , one for UL braid and one for 14lb braid and the LT 7 because it has an ultralight spool but is deeper than most holding 100m of #8. My budget is a lil' limited because I just brought 2 megabass rods so I would like to keep it under $500 (USD) because I need to buy a BFS rod with it. Any recommendations are welcome and as always thanks in advance!

What do you consider "heavier" fishing. I would pick up a DIY spool for whatever platform you choose for BFS. It wont cost you anywhere near $500.
Get your kids hooked on fishing, and they'll never have any money for drugs or alcohol.

Brenious. You can get an Avail deep spool from Japantackle or Hedgehog. Great reel and has the 50E form factor. I use mine for both finesse and general purpose.

This. Maybe even with a Mega Bass IS BFS spool if really required.

The stock SV spools in the SV103, Steez SV103XS, and other Daiwa platforms are fairly light and versatile all-around spools that can handle heavy and light down to 1/8 oz. with the right rod. Make sure that you flush the spool bearings on any new Daiwa reel if you plan to go light. Both of the mentioned reels have brass gears for the heavier stuff.
An extra DIY spool is always a no-brainer to have around if you want to fish lighter baits on a reel that doesn't have a light enough stock spool. I even have one for my OG Zillions, just in case I don't have enough lighter tackle in the boat.

How light or a lure are you looking to go for bfs and how heavy for general purpose?

Zonda hedgehog would be a cool one for dual spools but i've never held one.

Shoot, for $500 you could get a nice bfs reel and a nice general purpose reel.

Toddmc has a good point as well, I have tested the sv105, sv103, ss sv, and steez sv and can cast down to 1/8oz with the right rod. Also the 15 aldebaran 50 and chronarch mgl can cast that weight with the stock spool. The 50e reels can be had for cheap and spools are everywhere giving you one reel versatility.

You have a lot of options at that price point!

I actually ended up with an Alphas air and a Zonda 68R.
