It's not exactly plastic. It's either Nylon or Delrin. Nylon and delrin are very similar. They are very strong, not brittle, and exhibit self lubricating properties. This part of the reel is the Yoke. The elastic property of the nylon/derin yoke are perfect for holding the pinion gear in a near friction less fashion. Also perfect low friction material for cam action during spool clutch engagement/disengagement. And it's light weight. A wonderful material for a yoke.

Never seen a yoke made out of metal (in a bass reel. maybe it is made out of another material in a SW reel). And why would it be? What would you gain from having this piece made out of, say, titanium? Is your toothbrush made out of metal? No, because it doesn't need to be. Same applies here.

No doubt never ever have seen anything but a plastic yoke, not to say they don't exist and I take my reels apart Like a surgeon. As for the price you gotta pay to play you know what I'm saying if you feels better you can have one of those Abu Garcia freaks custom make you one if you want it metal that bad if you need that kind of Peace of Mind.

Daiwas used to be made of brass back in the day 2005 may have been the last

It could be made of bubble gum if the pinion is supported well on both sides.
As the only thin it'll do is move the pinion off the spool pin

At the prices these reels go for it should be titanium. Or carbon fiber. :P
