Retro style rod
Re: Retro style rod
Abu's are meant to be on pistol grip rods if you want the retro look. I bet that you can find one at most garage sales, or if you ask anyone in a tackle shop. You also can have a retro style rod made on the cheap. There are all kinds of cheap blanks, reel seats, and steel guides available.
Re: Retro style rod
St. Croix makes one in their premier line. Some where around $140. 51/2 ft long.
Re: Retro style rod
Yep, I agree that a pistol grip rod seems "right" for this little 1500C.
The St. Croix Premier pistol-grip would be a winner, and plenty good enough for the situation. That said I'd still like it a little more special with a different shaped fore-grip. Here is my current setup and it is indeed built on a St. Croix Premier 6' ML 2-piece blank. It's a cool little spiral-wrapped rod that Mattman built for a creek I grew up fishing. That said, I think it would go well with perhaps a Pixy (or a Conquest 50 I have on another rod), and I'd like something more traditional for my little Abu 1500C.
I really appreciate your comments.

Dang this place!
I come back looking for rod ideas for my little Abu, and the next thing I know a used Pixy SPR is coming my way for the rod in the picture above.

Re: Retro style rod
OK, plans changed quickly as a result of this thread.
The Pixy SPR I have coming for the Otterrod rod above really settles things for me, because between it and my little Conquet 50 setup I have enough at the petite end, and don't need to be spending even more money on a little retro setup.
Rather than looking for a rod for this Abu 1500C I'm going to sell it. Not sure if I'll list it here or eBay. It's unused with the box and goodies, and it was supertuned by Ian (e-_bassfisher). I bought it from Japan Tackle and I see they are all out, so I'll need to do a little research because I have no idea what these are selling for now.
If anyone has a pricing suggestion for me please send me a private message.
Thanks

Thanks! That's the baby of the family, "Spin Oreno." I've got the big boys, too! Nothing like seeing a big pike crush one on a misty morning.

Thankfully the Abu 1500C crisis has passed. I completely forgot I had a Wiebe-handled iMX 721 in the closet, so that will have to do for now.

I have a Rosso Pregunta 5.6 paired with a Megabass P200. Great combo.

Re: Retro style rod
Abu looks great on that old loomis!
Also, if you haven't seen em, Hedgehog studios carries some cool parts for those old abu's- from Haneda craft, kahara, iOS factory, etc

I think I’ll go with either 8# mono or some form of braid. I’m going to most likely throw 1/4 - 3/8 oz .give or take. I really haven’t used it. I bought it from Jun at Japan Tackle and then had Ian supertune it, so it’s ready to rock and roll.nctrucker wrote:Smalleyez , what pound test you throwing with the 1500? lure weights?

Re: Retro style rod
The last two pictures suck, but my point is the older Wiebe-handled Loomis 721 is a fine match for the Abu 1500C. It'll be a nice old style, light duty northern bass and small pike outfit. Sometimes the answer is right under your nose, and in the case of a Tackletour member perhaps it's that extra rod you forgot about in the closet!
