From my best guess of reading Japanese, my box says there's 7 bearings.
Thanks. If it has 7+1, they probably added one to the levelwind, normally the Scorpions are a slightly upgraded Curado. Also possible that the count is identical to the Curado K, and it was a simple misprint to list as 7+1 rather than 6+1. As long as a reel has bearings where the Curado K does, it covers the KEY locations. X-Ship should require 4 total on the pinion/spool, and it is nice to see Shimano add main shaft support for more and more reels.
My box just has some Japanese symbols in the spec section - and the one category says "7", so I'm guessing that's bearings.

One thing I was bummed about on this reel was the 84mm handle. Shimano seems to have gone standard to 90mm handles on all of their USDM reels.
Its a JDM reel. Most JDM reels have smaller handles. Its for the "people" on that side of the world. Thats their trend.
I think the XG model still gets the 90mm.
From what I've read online, it does.

So has anyone been out on the water with this reel yet and have any thoughts on performance? Mine arrives tonight, so looks like I’ll have all weekend to use it. Probably just rig this and a Curado K with frogs, maybe do a little deep cranking, and see how they compare.

I'm curious to see the parts diagram. I have one on order from Digitaka, but it will be another week before it ships due to the spring holiday :(

I really like mine, it seems to cast further with less effort than the Curado K. I have it rigged on a Shimano Zodias 7’2 MH. The reel is absolutely stunning in person and paired with the Zodias really is a nice combo.

Bearing count.

For those interested, there are 7 ball bearings plus a roller bearing. Compared to the Curado K, the Scorpion MGL removes a bearing from the main shaft, anchors the shaft with a clip instead of a screw, and then adds two bearings to the handle - one in each knob.

The newer Shimano reels have a screw into the bottom of the crankshaft, instead of just a C clip like they should have.

Yeh the Bantam was that way. These cheaper lines of reels won't have that feature just yet. It'll filter down eventually in coming years / decade maybe?

Much easier than the e / c clip in every way.

It takes me 1 second to pull the E clip. The screw however, takes time, and if you strip the head, you are SOL. Im not a fan.

The people tend to be split between the screw and the clip. The screw seems high end, the clip seems easier to work with when braking down a reel. The Curado K has a screw anchoring the main shaft. The surprise on the Scorpion MGL was they removed a bearing from the base of the main shaft (again, compared to the Curado K) and then put two in the handle. I don't understand that decision.

The Curado K has a clip, so does the DC all other K's I've done have been clips.

Or are we talking something else for example the retainer plate for the handle shaft?

Durr. My bad on the screw vs clip. The Bantam MGL has a screw. I'm still weirded out by the decision on the bearing placement.
