Shimano 19 Antares

Post by craigrbns » Fri May 31, 2019 1:07 pm

Can anyone tell me what makes this reel freshwater only? It would sure be nice to add it to my flats arsenal!

Thanks!

MGL spool.

But let's be honest that chrome finish isn't all saltwater safe either - based from experience.

Thought it must be the spool, but wasnt certain.

The chrome on my DC7 is still going strong! Didnt realize some were having issues with that finish. Thanks for the response!

Yeh some will and some won't have issues, I for one got issues... Spoke to a very well set chrome plating guy whose been running this shop here for decades, about removing the plating off my Calais DC, as doing any other way can / will damage it - in short he said "this is a dumb idea to plate aluminium alloy and use it in a saltwater environment"...

The finish looks great but yeh, acids from your hands and saltwater hmm dangerous mix.

But one could assume that the coating has come a long way since and been tweaked to be far superior...

I thought the MGL/magnumlite spool is some sort of aluminium alloy/fine for salt.

I think Bantam1 mentioned it was the chrome plating that was problematic in salt.

If it is the same spool material out of the chronarch ci4+, they turned to dust round the shoulder when used in saltwater...

Was quiet shocking how quick it occurred here... Spools replaced and within a month approx and it got to the same state.
